Was in PepBoys today and noticed Castrol Edge 0w30 and 0W-20 bottles with the word "new" on them and selling for about $8.00 a qt. What is this oil? Is this a replacement for Syntec or the GC Castrol? What Grp. oil is it?

GC was Formula SLX 0w30 (or based on it).

Edge replaces SLX.

So, basically, Edge 0w30 is the new GC.

Not sure about composition. There's no way to tell for sure. Whatever the case, though, you can be pretty sure it's still top-shelf stuff.

Interesting tidbit: Castrol Edge 0w-40 is Veyron oil, if that means anything to you.

Except that GC is 0w30 and this Castrol Edge at Pep Boys is 5w30.

So which one is it?

FYI, I only saw Edge 5w30 and 10w30 at PepBoys, but there may be others...

Now I am confused as to what I did see at PepBoys myself. I am going to go back today and pay more attention and then report back.

FYI, Castrol USA only mentions the 5w30 and 10w30 grades for the Edge:

Okay. I just returned from PepBoys in Minn. and payed stricter attention to the oil.
Here is what I saw:
Castrol Edge 5w30 and 10w30
ACEA A1/B1 A5/B5
ILSAC GF-4
API SM/CF
GM 4718M and GM 6094M
Ford WSS M2C929-A ( 5w30 only )
No Chrysler specs are listed
$7.99 a qt.

And -as an aside- they have 5qts. Royal Purple + RP oil filter for $49.95 with limit of two.

Actually, there's apparently another Castrol Edge grade... 10w-60. No PDS on it, but here's an SDS from Castrol's USA site.

I'm guessing this is the stuff that's required by some of the older M3/M5 engines. Never seen it in local auto part stores though.

I get the feeling the USA Castrol Edge (5w30 & 10w30) are Castrol's answer to the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oils. The Castrol containers say the oil is spec'd for 15000 miles.

Correct.

I think Castrol uses Lubrizol as one of their main suppliers.
