The site may be funny and all but I would say stay off of it unless the virus/malware problem has been fixed.
Virii and malware do not ruin computers or "crash" hard drives. They can royally screw up a Windows installation however.
That being said, I'm sure many computer stores thrive on spinning tales like that to consumers who don't know any better
Whatever it was, it removed all of the program and document folder icons from the desktop. It also removed the task bar. There was no way to open or run any of the programs on the computer. I have little to no knowledge of a computer's innards so I have to take the word of a good local computer repair shop and what I can find on a Google search. I do not remember how I did it but I was able to somehow restore the icons and task bar and her computer ran for a day or so, but the next day the icons and task bar were all gone for good. I took the computer in to the computer repair shop, they opened it up right then and there and said they did not want to take my money to fix it because it had a lot of swollen capacitors on the motherboard. None were ruptured yet but their diagnosis was bad caps on the motherboard and it would have cost much more than the computer was worth to replace the motherboard and wipe/reinstall the operating system. The shop did not charge us anything for diagnosing the problem. This computer shop is honest and has always provided good service and advice. Money was tight at the time so we bought her a good used computer. It worked fine when we bought it and it still works fine now.
No offense intended but we stay away from the people of walmart site, funny as it might be. There is another site that I would love to visit, it is all about old Snap-On tools, it is
www.collectingsnapon.com. Every time I try to go on that site my AV program sets off all the virus warnings and tells me there is a virus detected. I stay off of that site too, as much as I would like to see it.
Sounds like they treated you well. However, her getting a new computer due to a motherboard with failing caps, and her corrupted Windows install due to malware/virii are not related
One didn't cause the other here. Windows would have had to have been reloaded to fix the other issue. You can fix the cap issue if you are handy with a soldering iron. If not, the route you took is a good one.
