Is this supposed to be the very best synthetic motor oil on the market? Better than Mobil 1,etc?

This is a highly debateable subject but yes it's one of the best.

Pennzoil has the largest R&D budget of any of the major players and that's their flagship

Did you know they use off the shelf Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 in the Hennessy venom gt?

I would consider PUP (Shell Helix Ultra), Castrol Edge and M1 to all be equivalent and of the highest quality. Between the three, I would shop on price.

I do not think you can one is the best.

Do some looking at the petroleum institute of America web site.
They analyze many oils and specify if they meet standards or not.
They do not say any one is best. They will tell you however, if it is bad.

Many great synthetics out there. Pennzoil, Castrol, Mobil 1, Valvoline and more

Shop for good deals is not a bad approach to the synthetic search

No. Very good? Yes. The best? That's ridiculous. You can't generalize such a broad statement and regardless would be near impossible to prove. Does one meet more stringent specs?

I used the old formula a couple of times to see what all the buzz was about. It's a quality product, no doubt, but I wouldn't pay extra or go out of my way to find some when there are plenty of other great syns available for cheaper.

There is no best. Funny as I don't recall anyone saying what the NOACK is for the "GTL PP/PU". It's 4.4% for Pennzoil Conventional. I'll say that Pennzoil Conventional is "perfectly fine"

No and it's not available everywhere like Mobil 1 either.

I couldn't find the stuff when it first came out and it's still not available as the other brands. I was surprised to find some at Autozone during the clearance in December.

Very good oil. Best - maybe, but under what conditions and in which engine...

Some would argue that Motul is the best and I might side with them for some engines

It is good but far from the best. The GTL has been around since WWII. The real problem is availability. You simply cannot find the stuff when you need it. Mobil 1 and others are available at most retail stores at a great price.

I have not see PUP in the wild here.

Dude I scored 6 bottles of Pennzoil Ultra Platium 5w30s (used for current OCI) on clearance at AZ by pure accident. I was calling a local AZ about what turns out to be Belgium Castrol (after the changeover where now you cant find the unicorn "German Castrol") when he hit me with the news of the PUPs on clearance at another AZ altogether. Can you believe it when he said the 3 magic words "Pennzoil Ultra Platinum" Now granted anything 5w or 0w will become abject obsolete in 1 more month when summer obligatory arrives early but that single event opened pandoras box and now I Got my eyes peeled for the 10w-xxs for the summer, bring it!

Same here. My brother bought a 1997 Civic back in 2007. It had 90,000 miles at the time. It now has 289,000 miles. Aside from a couple of Amsoil oil changes, the rest of the miles was with either Platinum, and when Ultra came out, with Ultra.
We looked down the oil fill cap when he first bought the car, there was a good amount of varnish, pretty heavy in spots. I know other people have reported good results with Platinm and Ultra in regards to cleaning, but, we never really did see much of a difference, almost 200,000 miles later and there was almost no change.
Then, my brother said he wanted to try something else, so, these last two oil changes, we used Mobil 1. In just a short time, I can see a difference through the fill cap. Some of the dark areas are showing bare metal again, and these patches of bare metal are getting larger as the miles are racking up. Also the varnish on the rocker arms are lightening up, they were a dark orange/gold color, now they are almost an amber color.
I wasn't expecting much, so I was surprised to see what is happening.

Another plus, oil consumption is way down with Mobil 1. With Ultra and Platinum, there was steady consumption, to the point where I thought the car was borderline an oil burner. With Mobil 1, it is a lot less.

Also, the valvetrain is quieter with Mobil 1. I know, other people notice the opposite result, but, in this case, even my brother agreed it was quieter with Mobil 1 than Ultra.

I have wanted to try PUP, but I have yet to find any in north Alabama: not at Walmart, O'Reilly's, Advance Auto, or AutoZone. So I haven't used it yet.

No, I'm talking about the valvetrain rocker arms in the engine. Mobil 1 is cleaning off the varnish on the rocker arms of the engine's valvetrain.
