Pennzoil rumor again.

I was at O'Reilly auto parts this morning, enquiring about their new sales, and the guy mentioned that Valvoline Synpower and Pennzoil Platinum are on sale again. He then said that he would never ever put Pennzoil in his engine. I asked why and he responded by saying it foams in the engine and ruins your valves, etc... I have to ask since I am too lazy to read through all the other similar posts, has ANYONE actually experienced these problems in recent history?

I feel kind of stupid saying this, but I am going to use PP in my next fill and I just want to make sure it is just another lame rumor.

Neither, the actual factory fill from Italy is Shell Helix Ultra. The Pennzoil Ultra Euro formula is the same as the Shell Helix Ultra.

Tell your parts store manager there is a fellow in WI that says he is full of it and he does not know what he is talking about. And before he calls me stupid, I like the Vikings.

Which O'Reilly so I know to stay far away. I have an O'Reilly near me that has earned a fair amount of my business (most of the rest goes to Napa or Rock Auto if I can wait for something...). All depends on the sales staff...

What I would've done, since this fellow doesn't seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, would be to say something like this:
"Well, I am willing to take this engine ruining oil off of your hands for $10 bucks a jug, you don't want good paying customers to sue you for selling a sub par engine oil now, do you?".

Can you imagine the score you would've gotten if the guy actually agreed

I would say this is true, especially at the chain stores, since there is little to no product training and most of their (mis)information is anecdotal at best. Many moons ago I worked at one of those chains and remember seeing the long block cores come in. If the valvetrain was all gunked up, everybody would say the owner must have used paraffin based Pennzoil, however if it was clean they must have used Valvoline. BTW, how and where did this rumor get started?

It's ok, Pennzoil is meant to foam. Helps makes the car lighter and thats why its used in Ferrari's.

What a crock of you know what! I hate how these fallacies are spread like wild fire. Guy must be in love with a certain oil brand. Fanboism at its worst.

Parts people and mechanics are generally Uninformed about oils.
Especially with very new oils.

They will, however, have strong and definite opinions.

Pennzoil was and is a fine oil brand. No doubt.

I will add that any oil had it's hands full years ago trying to keep engines clean with no PCV systems, and infrequent oil changes.

Wonderful. An absolutely new totally erroneous rumor.

I was in Autozone recently when the clerk was telling customers the wonders of a K&N air filter. I opened my big mouth and told those folks the whole truth about the air filter making zero difference to fuel economy on any modern car with electronic controls. I hadn't even gotten to the part about the slimy mess of cleaning it and was watching the clerk's jaw moving up & down silently like a dying guppy.
