Here is my second oil report. Oh, Silicon... why can't you be lower?

7,000 mile oil run? Should I?

- 1998 Honda CR-V, 139,390 miles (Original owner)
- 4 quarts Pennzoil Conventional (PYB) 5w30, SN Formulation
- 5,887 mile oil run
- Purolator PureONE oil filter (PL14559)
- Used Fumoto valve (F106N) to drain oil
- MicroGard air filter used since 1/25/11 (5,718 miles ago) Previous filter was K&N drop in.
- Previous oil report/thread can be found HERE.

Even though that silicon number is high, it's obviously not silicon in the form of dirt, otherwise your wear numbers would not be as stellar as they are!

Holy Moly! PYB is worth every penny! I am switching to this stuff! Excellent UOA! I think the silicon will come down, you can go 7k as it seems whatever is getting in isn't causing any extra wear.

Silicon levels are coming down. When changing over to the Microguard air filter did you clean the air box ? I think your numbers will come down substantially in subsequent analysis.

It'd be interesting to see if they'd go back up AFTER coming down, if the K&N were re-used again?

Just my person preference, but I wish you had installed the Wix or NG equivalent instead of the MicroGard from O'Reilly.

Does anyone know what the pour point is of PYB? I think it's even more of a sleeper now than before and am considering using it instead of the Ultra. Problem is I'm in extreme northern Michigan and subzero winter temps are common. A lot of people in this area run conventional oil all year round and don't seem to have a problem. That is some good looking oil.

I did clean out the air box after changing the air filter to the MicroGard. I'll take a look at it again just to see how dirty it gets in there.

What I'll probably do is run the MicroGard for another oil run (which will probably take another 6 months or so), just to get another base sample, and then maybe try the K&N again.

That's NOT SN-spec pyb. Zn and P are way, way too high.

You sure that's not a CJ-4 HDEO?

I'd get the lab to check they gave you the right report.

Yes just look at the previous report the # are off re. zinc, ph, makes you think what else is wrong??? Amazing how these things happen on a regular basis.

I sent an e-mail earlier today regarding the Phosphorous and Zinc readings. Still awaiting a response from Blackstone. I'll keep you guys posted.

Definitely interested in hearing their response.

PS: Like your idea of simply doing 1 more K&N run eventually to see silicon trending for good or bad.

PPS: I wonder what oil this is then?

Im fairly certain its the same oil. Everything else matches too well. It is probably just a calibration issue with P and Zn. That is odd its high though. Usually they read low for me.

Have done any repairs to the engine?

Some new silicone gaskets and sealants increase the Si content of the oil without doing harm.

^As his previous UOA showed, his Si levels are indeed from the new Fel-Pro gasket(s), and as B_S commented wear would indeed be higher if it were from dirt ingestion.

...though, I'd be curious to see where it bottoms out at.

lol, nice catch, but I'm sure they read on his paper that he changed the oil at time of sample. They are really saying run the next fill out to 7,000. Just not communicated clearly.

Here are the comments from Blackstone Labs and the updated report.

Quote:
I had a chance to rerun your sample and both phosphorus and zinc were indeed lower this time. Phosphorus read at 777 and Zinc was 909 ppm this time around. I took a look at the check standard data and it looks like zinc was reading 17% high on your first test while phosphorus was just 6.5% high. We allow a +/- 15% for additive elements, so your zinc reading was indeed out of our specs. Also, molybdenum was out of spec by 17% (on the high side) as well, but those were the only two elements out of line. In any case, I'm sorry about this error. I'll correct these readings on your report and send you a new copy as soon as I'm finished.

Didn't even notice how close it was to a 6 month OCI. That was kind of a coincidence. I was aiming more for a 6,000 mile
OCI.

Do you think there is a big difference between my MicroGard vs. Fram vs. Honda OEM air filters? I still plan on trying the K&N again after this current oil run, since my Silicon does seem to be coming from my gaskets.
