Pennzoil Platinum vs Schaeffers

It's as simple as that. Which do you think is the "better" overall oil: Schaeffers 7000 (GII+ & PAO) or PP (current GIII version)?

And more importantly, why?

I'm well aware that "better" is relative to the particular application circumstances. I'm talking on average and/or based on formula design.

We all know they're both relative heavyweights. I love Schaeffers. But I am extremely intrigued with PP, which I will be using in the next three months. Sort of like Ali v. Frazier.

P.S., I hate head-to-head motor oil comparisons, but couldn't resist with these two.

I wasn't asking for my opinion (which I will have soon enough) but for those of the rest of you.

I guess nobody feels like arguing about two excellent oils. Thats a switch isn't it?

If these were the only two oils you could use, which one would you use in YOUR vehicle? And why?

In that case, I'd use Schaeffers. Why? Just to be different than the masses.
 
My 1997 Chevy Venture van with 101,000 miles and my 2006 Honda Civic with 9,000 miles spec 5W30 and I drive them both about 10,000 miles a year and only change the oil once a year.
Shaeffers synthetic blend Group II with PAO. PP=full synthetic group III?

Tough call. I like that Schaeffers provides more info, but is only a synthetic blend. Neither meet my requirement for a warrantied extended oil change interval. Noak numbers for both are poor. I guess I would go with the less expensive Pennzoil and support my Shell pension. But I'll stick with AMSOIL till something better comes along.
 
Pennzoil warranty is for up to 4,000 miles or 4 months and has to be used for the first oil change and within the first 36,000 miles of ownership and covers 15 parts. I see no mention of a warranty on the Schaeffer site. I guess a poor warranty is better than none at all, so again PP comes out on top.

I would like the Schaeffer rep to step in here and tell me what I'm missing. I'd rather support a site Reps product.
 
Both are good oils.

I have used the Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 recently in both of our Nissans and can tell you it has very low evaporation; almost imperceptible (185,000 and 92,000 miles on engines).

I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in my daughter's Equinox and see no loss of oil whatsoever (30,000 miles on engine).

There have been some good results with PP going out to 10k. 7500 should be pretty easy regardless.
 
I have difficulty comparing oils because I do not understand what the categories truly mean with regards to wear, longevity, etc. For example, the MRV number for Pennzoil is lower than Schaeffer's, which seems better, but I cannot tell you why. In comparing oils, here are some questions that would need answers for, but more importantly, an indepth understandning that could take years....1) Understand and appreciate all categories given on spec sheet. This would seem to require an understanding of the effects of these numbers on engine wear as well as a knowledge of different engines, materials used for them, and the nature of engine wear in general. 2) On Schaeffer's MSDS data sheet, they use 20-25%PAO basestock. They refer to using group III oils on data sheet. How much of the other 70% of oils are group II and group III. How much does that matter? 3) As a sidenote...Auto RX recommends not to use their product during rinse phase and ideally during cleaning phase with synthetic oils due to compteting chemistries. I find it interesting that Auto RX can be used with Pennzoil Platinum during both phases. Initially this seemed positive, but I wondered whether the compatibility denotes a "weakness" in the oil.. These are some thoughts I have,and understand they are from someone who likes to read about oil, but had trouble putting legos together as a child, so it is tough to envision mechanical wear with different oils.
