Pennzoil Ultra vs Platinum

I've looked at the differences between these two oils and not being too knowledgeable in oils other than I've used synthetics since my car had 50,000 miles. I'd like to know if one would work better than the other in my 2004 Volvo S60R which is a 2.5 turbo with 300 hp and has 125,000 miles. I would say I drive more like a granny than a formula one driver. I average 27.1 mpg on my 45 mile dail round trip to work. My car uses very little oil even for a turbo (1/2 a quarter between the 7000 mile oil changes). Most of my driving is back roads hardly any stop and go traffic, summer time temps rarely get into the high 80's and winter time temps rarely get below 15 degrees. Pennzoil recommends Platinum 5w30. My owner's manual recommends Castrol synthetic blend 10w30 for the 2004 but when you check the 2005-2007 owner's manual they recommend 5w30 for the same engine no difference between the years. So between the Ultra and Platinum and 5w30 or 10w30 which one would best suit my car?

Id use the Platinum due to the fact that it is HTO-6 approved which means it performs well under turbo applications. Ultra does not have this approval but is a great oil as well. If you need to clean up your engine a little use the Ultra but if not I'd just stick with the Platinum. Since you live in the far north east and due to the colder weather up there during the winter and it doesn't get too hot, I'd just stick with 5w30.

Use PP and save a few dollars. It will do just fine.

There must be something to the difference of the two oils. Pennzoil.com recommends their products for different specific applications and it seems they reco the PP more often than the Ultra.

Mostly because Ultra is still SM rated where Platinum is now SN rated.

Also, Ultra is ISLAC GF-4 and Platinum is GF-5.

My take, maybe wrong, is that PP is the mainstream line, while pu is the extended drain line. Kind of like Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance... Which is better is arguable...

I don't think even SOPUS knows what they want to do with PU. I predict it will slowly disappear or be reincarnated with a different marketing effort. SOPUS should fire the person or persons who came up with the marketing effort for Ultra when it came out. It was like an answer looking around for a question that was not being asked.

Platinum is a great oil, but if you look at the add pack and the PDS, clearly Pennzoil Ultra is a better oil. Not by a whole lot, but better. I would use the Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 for the winter at least.

I believe Ultra is being marketed mainly as having great cleaning properties. I think it does a great job of that while lubricating as well as the platinum line.

I think a run of ultra every third OCI might be a good idea just to keep things clean in there.
