I own a nearly new Subaru GT that likes a bit of oil, especially when on long interstate runs at 80 or so. Used about a quart in 4000 miles. This doesn't bother me too much, since I've read that most of the Subie turbos do the same. I've been using 5w30 Supertech the last 2 changes and have a couple changes of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 stashed but I stumbled into some 5w40 Havoline synthetic at Big Lots and thought I'd give this a try for the summer. The Pennzoil website lists a 5W40 Euro as well. Does anyone have any experience with this oil? I'm hoping the consumption / loss to volatilaty might be a bit less at a 40 weight hot. And would 5w40 be a good winter oil?

There have been a lot of Subaru's in the used oil analysis section that do well on xxW-40. I'd say you've got yourself a great oil. You're not going to find a lot of people who have used this oil though because it's rare; most stores only have the Havoline conventional. The only reason Big Lots has it is because they're a clearance store and Havoline has a new oil now.

Every NAPA store in my area seems to carry Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40. I used it for a while, but my engine liked it just a bit too much.
I must find this at my NAPA! I would switch to that oil for my Audi forever!!
You might want to try a "thick" xW-30 oil (German Castrol Syntec 0w30 would be a good choice) before stepping up to a xW-40 oil. My $0.02

The local NAPA stores are the ONLY place I've ever seen the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 Euro!!
Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I'll try the 5W30 Havoline this summer and post if consumption is lowered. Should have added that the Supertech I've been using is the synthetic. No complaints with that oil, just lookin for the magic bullet.
