My daily driver is a 95 Crown Vic P71. 105,000 miles, full maintenance, runs like a top, 21-23 mpg overall. Transmission is the 4R70W and works excellently.
Last transmission oil change I used Pep Boys Proline Dexron/Mercon fluid and of course a fresh filter. This time I used Pennzoil Dexron/Mercon fluid with a new filter and I have a bit of puzzler - maybe one of the fluid gurus can help?
I noticed that now when I first put the car in Drive, it takes a second or two to feel it go into gear. It did not do that before the fluid/filter change.
New fluid is at full level in park/idle. Looks fine.
Old seal was removed with the old filter.
Old fluid with 30K miles on it looked almost brand new, hardly anything in the pan. Made me think I could have left in there longer.
The ONLY different symptom is that slight delay and it only does it that first time into Drive. I know that some owners use Mercon V but I saw no reason to change to V over the regular Mercon which is recommended per Ford TSB info anyway. All other shifting, etc etc is flawless.
I know that the forward drum assembly is what is activated by valve body routing fluid pressure. This drum has a perimeter seal that traps the fluid and makes the drum move. Wonder if the Pennzoil fluid affects this seal differently or maybe a piston inside the valve body is bit worn. Am I concerned over nothing?
