Isn't shell helix pennzoil just re-barged?
If yes what would be the equivalence of shell helix hx7?
Meaning what version of pennzoil would be shell helix hx7....AND THANKS :p

Yes I think pennzoil and shell are similar products, both are SOPUS.

I'm not too sure about specifics.

I think the Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 is very similar to the Pennzoil platinum Ultra Euro. Both are API SN, ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.5 (Full Synthetic GTL oil)

The Shell Helix HX7 is a semi-synthetic

The Shell Helix HX8 is a full synthetic, but probably (given pricing and marketing) not as developed as the Ultra above. The 5W30 is SN, A3/B4, MB 229.3

All are good oils. The HX7 is a bargain for what it is where I live. It all depends on your car and application, if you own a Ferrari you need the Shell Helix Ultra. Any of them HX7, HX8, Ultra would happily work for me.

I looked into this a bit more.

In Australia the Shell Semi-Synthetic HX7 comes in 3 flavors:
10W-30 which is API SN , ILSAC GF-5
10W-40 which is API SN, ACEA A3/B4
5w30 ECT, which is for diesel DPF cars and is API SN and ACEA C3

In North America the Pennzoil semi-synthetic (synblend) is Pennzoil Gold.
It comes as 5W-20, 5w30 and 10w30. They are, all three, API SN and ILSAC GF-5.

So to me, maybe one product is similar and probably similar base components are used in all of them, but the overall semi-synthetic product range is different and represents regional market differences.

I have no idea what you get in your part of the world. You will have to look into it yourself.

Here is a link to a Pennzoil Gold spec sheet, it's a bit old but it may help you.

THanks alot...i was just looking to see the differences.
Here in the Caribbean we dont get Pennzoil at all :(, but when reading there is nothing about shell hx7 but a lot about pennzoil, then i came across that shell and pennzoil are both similar.

In North America they get Pennzoil, but the rest of the world gets Shell. Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, it's all Shell. Sounds the same for you.

It's the same big company, SOPUS, the only company that uses GTL (PurePlus) synthetic oil. Regardless of the name used, it is an excellent quality product.

What Shell oils can you get where you live ?

Do you have any more details about the oils, such as their viscosity, API rating and any other specs.

The HX5 is a mineral oil, the HX7 is a semi-synthetic, and the Ultra is a full synthetic.

My HX5 is a 15w40 mineral oil that is API SN and ACEA A3/B3. I think it's a good mineral oil for warm climates.

We also get a HX3 mineral oil that is 20W-50 and API SL. I would mostly avoid this old style oil with most modern or semi-modern cars, unless oil consumption was a problem.

Without having any more details, for your N16 and S13, I would run the HX7 in both of these cars. For me they are better oils than the HX5, but less money than the Ultra. A nice sweet spot in the range.

If the S13 had a Turbo or money was no problem, then I would happily use the Ultra. If I needed to save money, a SN rated mineral oil would be fine.
