Pennzoil 5w20 VOA

Just recieved this from Blackstone Labs It was an analyis of Pennzoil 5w20 SL oil

aluminum 1
iron 1
molybdenum 186
boron 68
silicon 3
sodium 1
calcium 1856
magnesium 5
phosphorus 672
zinc 785
all other levels were 0

vis sus@210 52.4
flash point 445
TBN 7.0
In the comments section they said that they thought the TBN was a little low for this type of oil

Yikes, that's a pretty thin 20wt, only 8.12cst. Lowest 20wt I've seen so far. Lots of moly in there though, and it's gonna need it! They should've formulated this stuff to be closer to 9.0cst.

Patman do you think the 9.8 viscosity for the VOA 5w20Honda oil was a mistake or is this stuff just a lot thinner I am hoping when the Mobil 1 0w20 comes out in March it will be thicker than this Pennzoil

cdavidc1949, The original virgin analysis that I submitted of the Honda 5W20 was done by Terry Dyson, a very well respected member of this forum. I would not be surprised if this was correct. Let's wait about another month when I get the used oil analysis results of this oil after 3000 miles in my sister's 2003 Civic EX and see what the viscoscity is then. -Joe

The pennzoil website claims this oil has a viscosity of 54 @210F, SUS or 8.6 @100C cSt.
I wonder if the lab erred or the viscosity in any give bottle varies this much? What do you all think?

I was hoping for better as this is what I am currently using in my 02 Accord, glad to see it has plenty of moly though!

I think that VOA on the 5w20 Honda probably wasn't a lab error, but I think the oil in that 5w20 bottle was 5w30 instead. It makes the most sense that this happened.

I would send a sample of Castrol 5w20 away but I have not been able to find any. Pennzoil is the only brand I have seen for sale other than Honda or Motorcraft available at dealers.

I think that VOA on the 5w20 Honda probably wasn't a lab error, but I think the oil in that 5w20 bottle was 5w30 instead. It makes the most sense that this happened.

That would be a good idea! It also might be a good idea for another 5w20 Honda sample to be sent, this time from a different part of the country to see if that one particular batch may have been wrongfully packaged.

Or Lab reporting is within the margin of error. Ie: If the lab is +/- 2 ppm on an element, the in reality the 1 reported could be 0, 1, 2, or 3. Measuring in at a 1 is of little concern, to me anyways. Over 3 ppm or so and then I start wondering (like the 9ppm iron in the German Castrol)

guys, i used Pennzoil 5w20 for the first 10k miles of life in my 02 civic ex. Seemed to work fine in combination with a mobil 1 oil filter. dropped it out at 3k with no problems.....only comment I want to make though is that on one occasion I ran the oil to 3750 miles oci and I needed to top off a bit. Stuff seems good, but a little volatile. been running amsoil 5w20 to 7500 oci since then and haven't had to top off yet.
