I've always read that Penngrade1 is a great oil for older engines, but I'm trying to see if it is okay for newer engines (specifically GM's LS family). I know Penngrade1 has really high levels of Zinc and Phosphorus and I don't know if that means it should used for older engines only...

GM LS engines have always been designed to work with the lower ZDDP levels of modern oils. The higher ZDDP is simply not necessary.

Not necessary but it won't hurt anything?

Won't hurt anything in the engine. Slight probability that it will poison the cat, if the engine sends a lot of oil out the exhaust.

Chance it would ruin the catalytic converter. I think the bottles of Penn Grade say not for use in street cars. Stick with a Dexos approved oil.

Yeah, I was considering it for that. I haven't even seen the new silver colored bottles for sale. Looks like Summit is still selling it in the bottles that say Brad Penn.

The new Penngrade 1 bottles are black, and the regular Penngrade product bottles are silver. Honestly the cat issue only exist if you have excessive oil consumption, so if the engine doesn't you should be in good shape. Do you have cats on it? I'll be the lonehorse here and recommend that you proceed.
