Hi,

I have a 91 BMW 318i. It has a breather system that connects the crankcase to the intake, but no PCV valve, by design. I believe there are bafles under the valve cover though.

I noted when changing my intake boot that there was some brownish junk in it. The TB looked clean, but the gunk was on the plastic boot... I figure this means its a good choice for adding a PCV catch can.

However, is there an issue with adding this if there is no PCV valve?

I got one of the small husky units and put it together, just to see what its like... I can push or pull air through, so it seems that it would be no different than if there was a straight tube... but am I not considering something fully?

Thanks,

JMH

My 320i didn't have a PCV valve, either.
I see no problems with using a catch can with BMWs system. Just point the schraeder valve DOWN, and drain it every week.

great, thanks!

Now I just need to find some barbed fittings that are big enough to fit in the breather hose... for whatever reason the OE hose on my m42 engine is rather large ID.

Thanks!

Might want to check out one of these:

Pricey, but very nicely made. Ask for two 5-foot lengths of hose with your order to ensure you've got enough to mount the can properly.

I went the Husky route until several BITOGers made me see the error of my ways. While they're good enough to experiment with, the Husky units don't handle synthetic oils or high temps very well.

Thanks for the info...

Do you know if anyone has actually experienced issues when using synthetic fluids, etc.?

If what folks are saying is correct, that its mainly just combustion junk, andnot really oil vapors, then there whould be no synthetic oils going through... High temps are another thing of course...

Thanks again,

JMH
