Anyone have any suggestions for patching a torn strut boot without taking it off? I know the obvious answer to replace the boot/strut, so please don't go there because the car is 17 years old and the New England rust is starting to get the best of it. It's got an appointment with the crusher in the not so distant future. ;-)

The best idea I have come up with so far is some saran wrap held on with some ties. Any thoughts?

The strut boot's function is to keep water out of the strut shaft area. Torn or missing isn't going to have an effect on your car. I wouldn't worry about it.

Clean it as good as you can.
Dry it.
Use duct tape. The new type 3M clear duct tape stuff is better.
Maybe spray paint it black so people don't see the duct tape.
