so im riding home from vacation yesterday with my passport 8500 on and ready to end up getting a ticket for 69 in a 55. It gave me enough time to slow down to 69(i was cruising at 80) but not enough time to get down to the posted speed limit. Kind of disappointing when i just paid over 300 dollars for it. i guess next time ill have to slam on brakes.

yes im considering it, but it has got me out of trouble on I-95 a few times, i guess it was just an unlucky day

You generally have to hit the brakes pretty hard at 80 MPH to slow down in short order. Don't forget: it's not about the time it takes as much as the distance, and you're covering a lot of ground at 80 MPH.

Besides that, any detector has to strike some kind of balance between how far out it detects radar and how many false alarms it spits out. It's always a trade-off.

Did you have it in highway mode at the time?

yes it was in highway mode, and i always keep all bands on including pop mode. The officer was using ka band, he was also coming towards me.

Most Highway patrol use Laser/Lidar that the radar may not even pick up. When and if it does, the cop has already clocked you!

Do not rely solely on the detector...been there, done that!

Oh. Well then I would hardly blame the detector.

I hope you don't mean what I think you mean. Speed itself is totally innocuous unless you exceed the design limits of your car. It's the conditions that determine safety.

Here in Virginia anyone can tell you that hitting a deer at 80 is very different than hitting one at 55. No radar detector can warn you of a 1) driver swerving into your lane 2) deer jumping into traffic 3) road hazard..wood/metal in roadway.

But of course you are better than everyone else and can handle any of these conditions at any speed....Nope thats right the state has set these limits because you shouldn't be going 80MPH.

I am a very athletic 30 something who drives a high performance car, yet I am not stupid enough to believe that I can safely drive 80 MPH and be safe, it will catch up with you even if it takes 100,000 miles.

slamming on the brakes to quickly go from 80 to 69 is really safe and good for all the various car parts...

Sometimes I drive 90 MPH on the highway when I am in a rush to get home. The key to not getting a ticket when speeding is to purposely drive in the middle of the pack of cars, not the first or last car.
