The ''hand brake'' was always considered an emergency brake....before those new fangled foot pedals came in.Here in NZ where vehicles have a safety/compliance inspection every 6 months (my full time job at the moment)we just used to drive along and rip the hand brake on and make sure we got a couple of good black marks.Doing that on the VN would rip the brake shoes right off the backing plate and make a real mess of the whole set up....try explaining that to a customer! We were warned about it before they came out of warranty and into general workshops. Now we do a 1 in 5 or stall test on them.Sometimes I'll jump in a Falcon and pull the brake on and hear a bang in the back end....oops! Falcon's changed at some point, and I can never remember what model I'm in behind the wheel.
