Are groups V base stock oils always better than group IV and so on? What about oils that are Group III synthetics (Like Castrol SYNTEC) that a lot of people seem to like? Is SYNTEC really worse than Royal Purple, AMSOIL, Red LIne, Mobil 1 or Lucas just because these oils use higher group base oils? Is there really that big of a difference to justify the higher prices?

...No depends on formulation.

The Syntec 5W-20 smells EXACTLY like Pennzoil Platinum once it has been run in my 4.6L engine. I has a unique non-oil/almost-food smell to it. I would guess it to be a Type V blend with EOP, and it is somewhat smoother that the PP.

I can safely testify that for RACING use the Group IV and V formulas give a large and significant difference in engine wear. This is eviedenced by engine teardowns. I do not know of any race engine builder still using dino oil. Also, for aircooled engines, the more expensive base stocks transfer heat better and reduce engine wear, but that is really a personal observation. With turbo cars, the manufacturer's own testing shows synthetics provide superior turbo protection. Now for the nitty gritty, mechanics can verify that a Redline, Mobil 1, or Amsoil lubricated engine will stay clean its entire life, even if maintneance is somewhat neglected (ie, my relatives). Once again my own personal observations on exotic cars is that parts last longer, with less wear, using synthetics. I think it just comes down to cost/benefit. Synthetics are better and they cost more. In my opinion if synthetics save you a single repair, they have paid for themselves.

Not necessarily. I can show you sludger saabs that had religious 5k M1 OCIs that don't look too spiffy. Synth is not an absolute guarentee of clenliness in the absence of maintenance or presence of an underlying flaw in the engine's PCV system/oil cooler thermo/or piston rings.

Isn't Shell Helix Ultra, BTW, a group III and Ferarri factory fill? I'm not here to defend dino. Just asking.

Group V is a catch-all group for things that don't fit in groups I to IV. Just because the group number is higher doesn't mean it has better performance.

For the rest of the question, read through the forums. Every few weeks there's a new holy war where people argue these things.

Heres the most recent msds on shell ultra helix i can find. Does this mean that its 75-84.99% group IV or V? And that 5-9.99% is group III, possibly a carrier for the additives? I'm not good at deciphering msds's, hopefully someone can translate this for me.

MSDS from the US show different composition than the same oil in Europe. Given Ferrary does not import oil from the US its engines are filled in with a severely hydrotreated slack wax.

I had suspected that. I dont understand why they have helix on the US web site, when its not sold in the US.
