So, I am putting up one piece of new interior trim in the house and the only matching piece I could find comes in bare Poplar wood.

I'm sure that I will prime it first with Kilz oil based primer, but do I need to do one coat and then sand and do a second? Do I only do that if the wood grain raises up? The other trim pieces have a very smooth painted surface on them and I'm trying to match them to the best of my ability.

For the topcoat, Kilz suggests using an enamel paint on top of their primers. It seems that the majority of the paint at the big box stores are acrylic nowadays (or oil based which I'll pass on), so enamel may not be an option. Is acrylic going to be OK? Hopefully the paint matching machine at HD can tell me what sheen is on the original piece.

I plan on using spray cans for the primer and topcoat so I don't end up with too many brush marks. Don't know if the color I will need comes in rattle can though, so I might have to brush it on. I'm painting it first and then installing and filling nail holes.

Thanks for any help and advice.

For doors and door frames, I highly recommend oil based paint. I have had issues with stuff sticking to doors, door frames, and shelves painted with latex paint.

Always paint trim in High Gloss, So much easier to clean off fingerprints etc.

Trim gets dirty fast.

Spray gun needed for the best job if available i could tell you the best paints for the project.

Just not true use better finish most homes are done in a satin or matte 20 to 45 sheen.

Sand then prime with high quality primer, sand again with 220, 320 grit then I would use Porter Paints Glyptex. Its a hybrid formula with a water cleanup. You should obtain excellent results with 2 coats of finish. Satin sheen is or low luster.
