I though i would share this. With our Cx-5 , one of the things i'm unhappy about is the paint. Its thin, brittle. I have 20k on it and the hood has numerous nicks. Some of them large. At some point , the hood will need to be repainted with better quality paint.

I'm not sure i blame Mazda, as i imagine it has a lot to do with low voc paints. So I thought i would touch up as much as i can, in the mean time.
I decided to try a paint cup pen. This actually works well. With the tricoat metallic paint, it will always be visible, but perhaps not rust. Looks better than the grey primer showing. I used xylene to clean the spots and also the paint pen afterwards. Lacquer thinner, might have cleaned the pen faster though. here are some pics.

For those of us over 50, you will need your bifocals to do this.

I know that Mazda had some issues with the Soul Red Crystal paint early on. Reading on other forums some were able to get new paint jobs but certain criteria had to be met.

I agree than in recent years the use of low VOC paints has increased the failure. I see it in many makes of vehicles. It seems to be a hit and miss proposition.

Sad thing is, my 13 elantra has better paint than the newer mazda.

That's a great touch-up. The only way to slow down the development of paint chips is to apply PPF/Clear Bra. The cost is steep and if appearance is not a major concern, doing touch-ups is a more economical option.
