Cool site. I recognize the clock and coolant gauge on the dash but that's about it. I do know the P51 was a really tough, reliable and maneuverable plane. I like the old WWII planes a lot. My personal favorite is the B17.

Nice thing about playing Flight sims is that i know what every gauge on that panel means lol. And that plane is a pain in the rear to fly. I always end up killing the engine somehow. Haven't quite figured it out yet =\.

I found a partial copy of a flight manual for the P-51 on Google Books that states that the oil capacity is 21 gallons, no mention of the type of oil used. The flight manual describes the function of an "Oil Dilution" switch that dilutes the oil with gasoline during the shutoff procedure, to lower the viscosity of the oil for the next cold weather start.

P47 Thunderbolts of the same era used 70 weight oil, and gasoline was recommended to be added to the oil in severe cold!

That link is very cool! I have all sorts of flight simulators and they are pretty faithful to what is shown here.

P51s had some excellent and some mediocre performance specs, but that was listed with full fuel. And they held a LOT [even without wing tanks]!
When actually AT the far away combat zone, they were much lighter and things improved substantially - they were about as good as you could get at that time with prop planes.
