I inadvertently let the P1 and fill of RT6 on my 2001 4.0 Cherokee run for over 14k miles this year when I meant to change at about 10k (lots of distractions- illness in family, daughter moving to college, and a hundred things y'all don't want to hear).

I cut open the P1 PL30001 I was running and for the first time found an actual failure in a P1. I've always assumed that straight pleats weren't a big deal, but I think maybe it is important. The failure is tiny, but it occurred at a kink in a pleat where pressure cycling would flex and work the filter media to failure, just as if it were metal undergoing fatigue. The fact that its the "join" pleat where the media is glued or crimped together probably has something to do with it also. This hole *might* not actually go through all the way... can't really tell and digging in would probably open it up anyway. Here's the element:

Nothing catastrophic and pressure would probably hold it mostly closed, but not something I like to see. Its making filters like the Fram Ultra and Royal Purple synthetic look better and better to me. I'm running an RP on this next fill, and will probably try an XG on either the wife or daughter's car next run. And all you guys posting pictures of cartridge type filters with the pleats kinked and crushed... I'd worry about that a bit!!

Here is a good reason to change your oil and filter more often.

What if you got a batch of oil that had no additives in it? If it is added by a human, it can be forgotten by a human.

5000 miles is plenty.

Thanks the the pic 440.

small, but something we dont like to see on the forum fav P1.

I think there was probably little or no leakage since that is the seam that is glued together. If your still curious you could maybe try shining a light on the inside to see if you can see an light through the tear.

That tear might have even been there since it was new.

Are you gonna get a used oil analysis of the T6 w/ 14k miles?

I've not dealt with P1s in a long while, so maybe they've changed.

But wasn't the knock on them that they had terrific first-pass filtration rates, but weren't the best on flow rate?

If that's still the case, I can see where leaving one in too long could lead to this (among other things).

Perhaps a Wix next time? They usually strike a perfect balance between filtration and flow and are generally high quality.

PureOne's are actually one of the better flowing filters out there. But synthetic media type filters like the Ultra likely flow even better.

That's way longer than a P1 was intended to be run but in all honestly I see nothing concerning there given the time and miles, just don't push the next one so hard. It was definitely "done" for sure, but I wouldn't call that a failure IMO.

Exactly my thoughts. I couldn't shine a light through the little gap, so it might be blocked by the glue layer. But I consider 8-10k about the max for a P1, good as it is. RP is my current long OCI filter of choice (based on the testing posted a while back on the GM truck forum that showed it a close second to the Amsoil EAO of all the filters they tested). But the Fram Ultra is really tempting. Just not enough of a price difference ($5 less than an RP at my nearest FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto Parts Store).

Didn't bother with a used oil analysis this time... probably should have checked it. But honestly that's not very long for T6. Just too long for the P1. ;-)

FWIW, I used to be a WIX fanatic, but got very disillusioned with their ADBV leak-down overnight.

Ack! I just bought a Napa Gold for the Jeep for the "cold" months run.

Having very good start ups now with an Extended Guard maybe I should stick to those for winter, I already have another.

Out of curiosity-how much junk was in the filter can on that long of an OCI? I'm running the same filter on my son's '98 XJ, and with it's witches' brew of half 10W30 NG MaxLife and half 15W40 Rotella T probably won't be run longer than 5-6 K, it's doing really well on the oil consumption front & I may try to extend it on a better oil (such as Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Mobil 1 0W40) on the next OCI.

I agree with the other poster; next time just change the filter sooner. This little problem is not significant.

All filters will fail with time. That's why they get changed. It depends on how much time/use has gone by.

Remember that if there is a hole in the media some oil is still passing through the tighter regions of the filter element where it is supposed to go, so some filtration is still going on, and this filter had caught plenty of loose matter.

14,000 miles is over the top for this model. 10,000 is more reasonable.

No "junk" at all, as in visible grit. The media was pretty dark (although P1 media is darkish to start) with blow-by carbon, but nothing bad looking at all. Nothing sludgy, nothing gritty.
