I inadvertently let the P1 and fill of RT6 on my 2001 4.0 Cherokee run for over 14k miles this year when I meant to change at about 10k (lots of distractions- illness in family, daughter moving to college, and a hundred things y'all don't want to hear).
I cut open the P1 PL30001 I was running and for the first time found an actual failure in a P1. I've always assumed that straight pleats weren't a big deal, but I think maybe it is important. The failure is tiny, but it occurred at a kink in a pleat where pressure cycling would flex and work the filter media to failure, just as if it were metal undergoing fatigue. The fact that its the "join" pleat where the media is glued or crimped together probably has something to do with it also. This hole *might* not actually go through all the way... can't really tell and digging in would probably open it up anyway. Here's the element:
Nothing catastrophic and pressure would probably hold it mostly closed, but not something I like to see. Its making filters like the Fram Ultra and Royal Purple synthetic look better and better to me. I'm running an RP on this next fill, and will probably try an XG on either the wife or daughter's car next run. And all you guys posting pictures of cartridge type filters with the pleats kinked and crushed... I'd worry about that a bit!!
