95 GM 3.1 V-6.
P/S pump whines at start up. Worse during cold weather.
Quiet when warmed up.
Any fix? Considering changing to synthetic-if I can find some. OR maybe MaxLife fluid(Wal-mart) but I doubt it's synthetic.
Work fine, just noisy.
Any thoughts or ideas?

you can try to drain all the PS fluid out and just replace it with whatever it calls for.. that year maybe dexIII but dont hold me to that..that may help. as far as synthetics go, dont waist your money

or what you could do AFTER finding out exactly what fluid to put on the PS, is to use a turkey baster or other kind of suction thing and suck out what you can in the reseveour and fill it back up with new fluid.. drive around for a while maybe a week or so and do it again. anything will be better than nothing. just something to try

I've had three fwd GM's with 3100 engines. All the power steering systems were noisy and sluggish when cold... it's the nature of the beast. In the two that I still own ('94 Corsica and '01 Lumina), I've changed the p/s fluid (turkey-baster method) to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It completely eliminated the sluggish operation when cold. They're both still noisy, though.

When Toyota's do this it is usualy becuase their flow control valve is gumed up. If drain out a cup of p/s fluid and replace it with a cup of MMO it will usualy solve this. Once you consistently qet quite operation drain the whole system and refill with fresh fluid.

Oh Auto-Rx works even better if you have some handy but if not you can use MMO or Seafoam transmission treatment or TransX or transmedic. Basicly you are trying to get the varnish to disolve into the old fluid then get it out and fresh fluid in!

Sometimes a PS pump will be a little noisy from wear. When this happens, it usually has no effect of the life or performance of the pump, it is just an annoyance. Sometimes a little bit of friction modifier added to the fluid cuts the noise. Definitely get clean fluid in there first, and using a fluid that starts with a higher level of friction modifier may help.
