My Father has an 02' (I think) Elantra that, to the best of my knowledge, has never had the PS fluid changed. I don't have the manual in front me, so I was wondering if Hyundai needed special fluid or if the generics would do? And what is a good PS fluid to go with without stop leak?

According to the Amsoil site, it does take PS fluid and not ATF.

Thanks.

I have an '03 Sonata. The owner's manual specifies "PSF-3" type power steering fluid. I have no idea whether there's anything specific about this fluid as is the case with Honda power steering systems (other than stealership pricing).

Thanks RayH. That at least gave me a good search term for Google.

I found a couple of older posts that said it was compatible with Dexron II. I hope this is the case because I would love to use some Amsoil ATF I have on hand. I'll be sure to check the manual and see what it says.

Anyone else?

P.S. Apparently there is a PSF-4 out now, too.

My local dealer claims that they just use ATF in the power steering systems, apparently they use SPIII. However, they do have the PSF-3 on hand, so that's what I use.

I would suggest calling Hyundai and asking them if it's ok to use ATF. Even so, I don't think there is anything particularly unique about the PSF-3, but I wouldn't risk using something else if it's still under warranty.
