I have been read some forums on the use of atf for my 2002 Elantra. All have suggested not to use any atf but Hyundai, kia or Daimond ATF SP-III fluids. There reasoning, the other fluids will deteriorate some of the non-metallic parts inside transmission over time. Shorting the life of the transmission. Is the true?

No, its not true.
You need a HMF'd fluid to allow the slip controlled TC to function.
You can't use DexronIII or Mercon as it'll shudder like mad.
ATF+4 is an excellent affordable choice.
Any of the universal or multivehicle ATF's mentioning SPIII can be used too: Castrol, Valvoline, Amsoil, Amalie, Royalpurple, Mobil 1....

Hyundai uses a tracer/dye in their proprietary ATF.
This is for warranty claims, and if the wrong fluid is in there, they will know.
But like unDummy's excellent answer stated, there are other fluids that will work perfectly.

I just bought a new sonata and I like the way it shifts so I plan to use the Hyundai fluid and drain and fill every 15k. That to me is the best option so there wont be any issue with the service dept.
As long as it is SP-III rated you are good to go.
I use Amsoil ATF which claims to meet this spec and have been for the past 100K KM (60K Miles) and it's nothing but smooth shifting. I have over 200K KM (120K Miles) and the transmission runs much better than when I was using OEM fluid.
