My '97 Nissan Altimas' owners manual calls for Dexron II P/S fluid. I went to Walmart and they had Valvoline MaxLife with stop leak, Supertech, Prestone and couple of other kinds but none ofthem had the DexronII spec. I picked up a 2 quarts of the Valvoline MaxLife, and plan on extracting as much fluid as I can from the fill with a large syringe, and refilling. Should I use this fluid or go to an auto parts store and look for DxII type?? Is the P/S DexII same a the DexII/III ATF?? What I have in the P/S rservoir now (factory fill) certainly doesn't smell like ATF. What p/s brands are DexII?
thx

If you read the DexIII bottles more closely, you'll probably find that most of them are good for DexII applications.

So it is OK to put DexIII ATF in my Power steering?

Of course. Yes. This is what Kestas said. Just grab any Dex III ATF and you'll be fine. Dexron has always been backward compatible. Most all PS systems are simply not particular about fluid type.

I just did turkey baster on 96 sunfire on 11 year old psf. manual just says use GM part number blah blah, no mention of dex 3. I used supertech psf, figure it's prestone at a cheaper price. no problems this past week. The only psf that I saw that was very particular on shelves were for acura/honda's.
