P/S Fluid - 2007 Mazda 6 - 3.0 V6

All,

Looking for info regarding the P/S fluid that may have been the factory fill on this car.

Under "Lubricant Quality" in the manual, it states:

Power steering fluid - ATF M-V, or equivalent (e.g. Dexron® III)

This should mean that I can use my Mobil 3309 ATF Fluid, correct?

If they have the notation (e.g. Dexron® III) in the manual, and the Mobil 3309 ATF states it meets Dexron III on the bottle, I'd go ahead and use it.

That being said, Amsoil also lists "Multi-Vehicle Transmission Fluid" for Power Steering use in all 3 engine sizes for the Mazda6

In fact, "ATF MV" is actually listed within the specs on the ATF page:

So you couldn't go wrong their.....but I'm sure for a top off, the Dexron III won't hurt...


I'm guessing the ATF M-V is the "genuine OEM" line.....heh.

I don't think the Mobil 3309 is the same. It should be mercon 5.

MV is it's own fluid. It is not Mercon V, DexIII or anything else. Mobil 3309 is the same as T-IV.

I'm in the same boat as you concerning PS fluid. The only component that calls for MV on my 6 is the PS. I don't want to go to the hassle of getting a bottle for this single application, so I'm going to use Mobil 1 ATF that I have on hand and use in other vehicles. I wouldn't use the M1 in place of MV in an actual trans, but it's just the PS so I cant see much harm it would do.

Thank you. I found a Mazda TSB here that outlines the same things. M-V is NOT 3309. M-V is also NOT Mercon V. I knew that Mercon V and M-V were different things, but 10 minutes ago, I would have put money on 3309 being the same as M-V. Sigh.

Hrm, if I owned more than one car, I think I would go this route. However, seeing as the only ATF I have is the 3309 stuff, I guess I'll have to acquire more things!

EDIT: I'm using the Mobil 3309 stuff to do drain/refills on the transmission. So easy on this car. I don't see the point of switching to a Synthetic ATF unless the whole T/C was flushed.

Yes it is very easy. I tried to get my hands on some Mobil 3309 for the trans but couldn't find any, so I'm running Toyota T-IV. Researching other threads around here I came to the conclusion T-IV is a licensed blend, similar to ATF+4. So, if it says it's T-IV it meets the required specs. Others have tried universal ATFs in place of T-IV with mixed results. Often, they cited their desire to have a synthetic ATF(which T-IV, isn't. At least not full syn) to allow longer runs. IMO, considering how easy it is to do a drain and fill(at least on our 6's), why bother with the potential negative results?

As to your PS situation, you can get MV at your Mazda dealer or a Ford dealer. Ford calls it something else, but since they shared powertrains with Mazda the Fusion and Focus utilized the same spec fluids in some instances.

Our 6 wagons sound like they may be twins! Is yours a Grand Sport or Grand Touring? Mines all black with the 18" snowflakes. They're pretty rare.

'07, V6, ATX, 18" Snowflakes, Black, 6-Disc Bose (non-MP3). Insurance Card lists this as a Grand Touring (I think). Car is new-to-me as of September.

How is yours with cold starts? I hate the fact that this motor goes right to a high-idle, regardless of how cold it is. Last week it was -10C (14F?) in the morning, and the car took an extra revolution or so to start, and then right to 2000 rpm.

I've been running Amsoil ATF in mine for about 2 years with great results. Not sure if it has that spec for sure though, but I was told by Amsoil rep it would be good for it. Can't complain.
