oxygen sensor for '02 Celica GT

Not sure how a normal clean MAF sensor is supposed to look but @ 138k miles, I figure I'll give CRC's MAF sensor cleaner a try and see if it'll improve performance and/or mpg.
 
Replacing a O2 sensor with the OE manufacturer is always a good idea . Many times I have seen customers complain/want to return a non OE sensor because it didnt "fix" the problem or return factory like performance. If in doubt to what the OE is it is generally safe to use either a Denso or NTK sensor. I see a high return / complaint ratio from Bosch O2 sensors. However is Bosch is the OE surely use the Bosch.

I'm quite sure the OE is a Denso. It was replaced with another Denso and that was the one that turned out to be faulty so I replaced it with a Bosch this time and so far, so good.
The next time it needs to be replaced, I think i'm gonna try NTK. I know that with spark plugs on Japanese vehicles, it's best to go with Denso or NGK, guess I'll stick to that rule of thumb for the O2 sensor also.
 
The rear O2 sensor is used to check the efficiency of the Catalytic Converter. As the front sensor toggles constantly from rich to lean, the rear O2 sensor should not toggle much at all, especially when the system is in closed loop.
 
Update: With 3 full tanks of gas on the new Bosch upstream oxygen sensor behind me now, I am getting 33-34 mpg on fuel consumption. That's 3-4 mpg better than the best 30 mpg with the Denso that was replaced. As for the transmission not shifting into 4th until the vehicle is warmed, the symptom still remains.

Your suggesting the bosch 02 is better than the denso. Newer is all. Its true bosch O2's can cause problems on Toyotas. Does not calibrate well with the ECU, gets lazy sooner. The denso is cheaper, the local auto parts store make more on the bosch so they peddle that. Its calibrating fine for you so leave it. Any issues down the road get rid of it for the denso.

If its a 1ZZ-FE change the intake manifold gasket. Known to dry up and fail from heat, causes A/F, idles issues, etc.

I agree with you in that the Bosch is a newer sensor than the Denso it replaced. I'm thinking that Denso was a fluke. I like Denso and you are correct, when the Bosch fails, I will go back to Denso, I'm not giving up on Denso at all.
