During a reversible procedure that takes less than an hour, the patient is fitted with a custom patch for the tongue which makes chewing of solid foods very difficult and painful, limiting the patient to a liquid diet.

I have a hard time imagining what life would be like if I needed something like this to hold me to a diet for my own good.

The only logical outcome of our society's weight issue is a die off. As unpleasant as it sounds it is the only conclusion I can come to.
I too am overweight, but finally broke down and hired a personal trainer.
I see kids come to the gym, dropped off by their grossly overweight parents. Their parents want them to be better athletes, but what happens after that? What do the kids see as their role model.
I don't like the conclusion that I have come to. The complications that come with Diabetes are nothing but horrific.
However, people will realize when their loved ones start passing away that they need to get serious and adjust their way of life so that they can live long enough to see their grandchildren.
That's my goal. Grandchildren. I'm 29 now and most of the men in my family, both sides have passed away in their early 60's.

Hopefully our society as a whole will reach a critical mass (pun not intended) see the error of their lifestyles and begin to get healthy again. Until then we will see people do crazy stuff like this just to lose 20 lbs.

How about people just eating non processed food?
I think there is a huge correlation between the increasing amount of fast/preprepared food being consumed and rising weights.
To be honest I eat too much and don't get enough regular exercise for the amount I eat, but its 98% stuff that we cook so my weight has plateaued at 220 and I'm 6'1", so I'm not waddling around just yet.
It would almost be hard work for me to get much bigger as I keep a few pounds of apples or carrots around if I have the munchies.
If someone brings over some processed junk that I can't feed to the dogs or chickens, it goes in the trash... Or sometimes into the woodstove, as its amazing how hot cheetos burn, that way its not "wasted".

I love things that I don't like that I can heat my house with too!

That's typical of the quick fix mentality embraced by most obese people. Once the weight loss has been achieved the tongue widget will be detached and the formerly obese person will return to the pre-widget eating habits. They will most likely regain all the lost weight plus some additional weight.

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to commit to a healthy eating and exercise lifestyle. Quick fixes, diets, pills and tongue doohickeys simply won't work long term.

Makes way more sense than those fad diets of eating less or eating better. If it sounds too easy to be true, you probably need a surgical procedure instead.

My latest try at quitting smoking is a prescription of Chantix. I just finished my first month. Unlike previous attempts, I dont compensate for not smoking. The less ingredients in your food , the better off you are.
