Oversized filter for V6 Stratus a good idea?

I have a 97 Stratus V6. Filter size for reference is a ST16. I found, with the previous Stratus V6, that a Motorcraft FL-1A will fit just great, and it is a bigger filter. I also experienced an oil light on at hot idle, sometimes with the FL-1A, one time I used that filter. That car had 168M and the V6 engine has been known to have bad pressure sensors. SO, if not the Motorcraft FL-1A filter in particular, would anyone really recommend using that size filter again on the present Stratus? There are no clearance issues, the oil capacity goes from 4.75-5qts to 5.25qts with the larger filter. Maybe the extra size helps oil cooling, filtering and flow?..or was this not a good idea, as the last Stratus experienced the supposed pressure drop? I appreciate the input and help! Thanks!!

I've got a "Mopar" V-6 as well, but the Mitsubishi-made version. In general, going oversize has few negative ramifications, with improved flow capability being the primary benefit (as well as higher particulate load/clogging resistance for those in especially dusty environments). Not sure how the FL-1A would give you an oil light flicker. If a particular oversize gives you pause, simply try another brand. Wix/Napa Gold, Baldwin, and PureOne are just a few well-made, mid-priced brands.

This bulletin was issued to try and clear up some confusion with the Stratus and Sebring car lines. The Stratus sedans and Sebring Sedan and convertibles are made by Chrysler using a 2.4 and 2.5(pre 01) and a 2.4 and 2.7(01+). The Stratus and Avenger coupe and Sebring coupes are made by Mitsubishi and use a 2.4 and 2.5 engine(pre 01) and a 2.4 and 3.0(01+). On the mitsubishi made models they use a different filter with metric threads. The Chrysler made cars have standard threads and use the Typical chrysler filters.

this should affect this 97, using the larger Ford filter will work, provided it doesn't stick down too far.

I have a 1994 dodge shadow with a 2.5L 4 cylinder that takes the same oil filters that your stratus V6 takes. I have used wix 51085,purolator L14670,ac pf13 and others these are the factory spec filters. I have also used these oversized 1 Quart ford spec oil filters with no problems at all Wix 51515,motorcraft FL1A,purolator L30001, and others If you suspect oil a pressure sender malfunction hook up an oil pressure tester to confirm that your engine is operating at the proper pressure as the installation of an oversized oil filter should not effect the oil pressure at all.
