Oversize filter for 2000 Toyota 1.8

Anyone know of an oversize filter for the Toyota 1.8 4 cylinder? The standard filter is quite small (ST4976); I would think there must be a readily available oversized one?

I did an oil change on a Corolla and personally don't think there is room for a bigger filter. Maybe I should've avoided the beer and pizza before the change.

But, Toyota uses the standard thread(like Fords) which is 3/4-16. Maybe try the ST3600(?) Taurus filter. The Taurus filter is longer and larger diameter and might not fit.

If the ST4976 xreferences with the Fram PH4976, then try xreferencing the longer PH4386(2000 Suzuki 4 cyl)! The Suzuki filter is slightly longer and the same diameter. It might fit.

I was looking at the PH4386 myself last night and concluded it would be OK for smaller Toyota applications. I also believe the Ph8316 looks like a good filter design (though still don't understand why the need for the check valve). I purchased several of the 8316 but it is longer in length .

All filters should have a ADBV. This prevents oil flowing back to the pan when engine is off. This will reduce cold start clatter. Filter placement(vertical/horizontal) has nothing to do with antidrainbackvalves. Some vehicles may have this in the oil pump or somewhere in the oil flow.

The other is the filter bypass, which is used if the filter is clogged/collapsed or overly restrictive(usually when oil is cold and thick, or at high volumes of oil flow).
Some vehicles(GM) have this built into the oil filter mount or oil passages.
Some automakers specify bypass location to supposedly prevent oil from washing trapped particles through the bypass. Others use a check valve, that might be confused for(or integrated as) a bypass, to prevent filter spillage(enviromentalist oil filter) when removing.

The 8316 is similar to the 3600. Checking other brand equals show that the filter size is similar but the bypass pressure is higher in the 8316. I wouldn't worry about it.

I own a 03 Corolla. There is enough clearence for a ST3600; this is the oversize that fits my car. I don't know how much room for an oversize filter a 2000 model has. I had one main concern when selecting a oversize filter-my corolla uses the same size filter(ST4976) as yours. All of the oversize filters use a larger gasket than the ST4976 type. The gasket just fits flush with the edge of the filter housing. I wouldn't use a larger gasket if it did protrude. After the oil change, I check the filter for leaks-often, but I havn't had any problems with leaks yet.
The Purolator L22821 for a 1985 corolla is a oversize filter-with the same gasket size and bypass setting, but the filter is alot wider and almost touches the oilpan on my car. Also the bypass is on the dome end of the filter, which seems silly.

I took a closer look today...theres plenty of room for a longer filter with lots of clearance. Not sure if i'm fond of the o ring type gasket v/s the standard flat type.

The 8316 seems unique in that it has the typical bypass valve (at a higher pressure as you noted), the anti drain back, AND a check valve. The check valve appears to be a 3rd "device" and not the same as the bypass and anti drain. I believe it also contains these as well although I've not opened one up yet.

Perhaps the check valve and the bypass are integrated but why the change in design and need for a "check valve" for certain engine applications. That is what I don't understand. The check valve certainly looks different than anything I've seen in other filters.
