overfilled tranny, damage possible?

the last 6 weeks has seen $5k worth of warranty work on the 2000 Volvo XC, including a complete rebuild of the transmission. i just checked the transmission fluid level and it's at least 1-2 quarts overfilled from AAMCO. they had another XC in the shop the same time as mine and they are only one of two shops in the metropolitan area qualified to work on Volvo transmissions so this is quite a dissapointing surprise.

what are the chances of harm occuring in the two weeks and 1200mi that i've driven her in this state.

am i checking the fluid level correctly? i check it after a 20 minute+ period of driving and pull the dipstick with the car running....

Warranty work on a 6 year old car?

No harm done if transmission operated normally.

Use a vacuum pump and draw out 8 ounces and check again. ATF dipsticks tend to be graduated differently then oil dipsticks. I'd wager that you're a pint or quart overfilled which is no big deal.

You need to reference the owners manual on how to correctly check the ATF level.

Time driving isn't as important as ATF temp.
Level surface is important.
Running vehicle, and shift selector are vehicle dependent.

I cant get my ATF level to ever read properly on my 98 Chevy ZR2... Its always higher on one side than the other, and even when putting in the amount per the manual, I cant get a full reading.

Its the dipstick or my fault, the truck shifts A-OK... even after I added another quart.

Are you sure its really off, or is it just the dipstick?

The risks of over filling is aeration from being churned up in the rotating assemblies. Once aerated ..it can be compressed ...lowered pressure on applications ..slippage ..overheating ...damage.

Go back and point it out to them ..or tap it off yourself.

I'm unsure if, once aerated, that the fluid will return to a functional state

I'd like to think so.

I was never a fan of AAMCO(All Automatics Must Come Out). Too many stupid mistakes on their parts.
