Over filled/under drained should I be concerned?

I bought 8 qts of Castrol Syntec 5w-40 and a new filter for my BMW x5 3.0. I had time yesterday and went outside to chg the oil when to my surprise it was very cold. The cold was not so bad, 20* but the wind was blowing steady at 20-25 mph... felt like siberia.

So I called Jiffy Lube, they said they could do it for $30. Fine. I watched the kid do the filter and oil pour through the window. He poured in 7 full qts and a part of bottle 8, when he gave it back it had 2 ozs in it. no big deal I can put it in later.

I went to check the oil and it is 1/2 qt too full. When I change it I just pour in all 8qts and the level is right at the top hash mark.
Did he not drain all the oil out? when you add the 2 ozs to the 1/2 qt over fill you are close to 3/4 overfilled. Should I be concerned.

I will never use Jiffy Lube again.

He didn't let the oil drain long enough. Being over 1/2 qt shouldn't be a problem. OTOH if I paid someone to do a pro job I would want it right. I would probably bring it back and see if they could extract via the dipstick or drain plug enough oil to bring it to the full level. Then top up with Syntec at their expense if they take to much out. It really sucks paying a pro and then having to live with their error, or have to correct it myself. JMO

1/2 qt is nothing BUT....the dude should have let it drain more!,want something done right do it your self, should have waited till a better day.

lesson learned?

When the engine is running how much oil is up in the engine circulating around? I guess at least 1 qt which would bring my oil level in the safe range during operation. Or am I wrong to think this way?

My Father in Law had a VW Rabit before he passed and the gas station over filled it by 1/2 qt (that engine called for 3 1/2 qts, the tech put in 4). Anyway he drove it home and it foamed over through the oil cap all over the driveway. No other mechanical problems were found when they towed the car back to the shop and the shop owner re-did the oil change and everything was happy ever after.

LOL- Sadly it is the truth though. I remember having my Aerostar transmission serviced one time and I decided to check the fluid level the next day. I had to extract 1 1/2 qts of ATF to get it to the proper level. Turns out the shop I used for the work was using a new guy. It really is sad that finding someone reliable and competent is so hard, even for something as simple as an oil change!

I honestly think some people try to be stupid, this way people/bosses won't expect much from them. It's either that or they are truly stupid.

I think there are a whole lot of people who don't have to try.

Doesn't that engine have an oil filter on top? If so, I would guess that the filter was opened with the drain plug in. That would drain canister into the oil pan.

Yes it does have the oil filter on top. when you open the seal it does drain out bout 95% from the cartridge canister. That doesn't explain wht it wasn't drained completly... they just put the drain plug back before it was completly drained. The oil bottles didn't have extra oil in them

P.S.
Now I get it they drained the pan. put the plug back in, then opened the canister... okay I actually feel better now. It's still stupid but I think I understand.

With cartridge oil filter on top of the engine, you can use an oil extractor to do oil change without jack up the car. The oil dipstick tube of BMW, MB, Audi ... are designed so that more oil can be removed with an oil extractor than drain plug.

Better a half quart over full rather than a half quart below add.
He probably didn't get a complete drain- then after a fill and run, recheck after the oil settles.
I never used a Jiffy Lube - I have seen what looked like school kids working at my nearest Jiffy Lube.
I use a high rated indy that has always done me right for 2 of my vehicles that do nothing but Toyota, and another reputable indy for the wife's SUV (non Toyota). Only because now I usually don't feel like doing oil changes anymore, and I can afford it too.

Lets see here. You went to an outfit that cater to customers whos main priority are saving time, money and getting an oil change done within 10 minutes. Now these robots who work at iffy lubes are taught to work fast so they can make their customers happy i.e. get them in and out and make them happy.
If you go to a zoo you are bound to see a monkey. If you don't like monkeys don't go to the zoo.
