"Jury Duty". Pack my bags and send me on a guilt trip..... NOT!... About 10 years ago when I was working nights I received a notice for Jury Duty. I called the number on the notice to tell them I couldn't do it because of my job. I got some arrogant guy on the other end who told me, "working nights is not a dismissible excuse!" In such a sarcastic tone of voice, that it would have gotten him punched at any bar.
And then he proceeded to talk down to me like a child, giving me an earful about, "civic responsibility", along with everything else except trying to work with me to come to some type of plausible solution. (I had some vacation time coming up, and would have been willing to put a couple of days aside to comply. But since he was acting like a jerk on steroids, I didn't bother). So when it became apparent he wasn't going to budge, I then asked him if it would be OK if I slept in the jury box, because that is exactly would happen. Because I'm sure not going to get fired for sleeping on the job.
He then got even more arrogant and demanding, and told me if I didn't comply I would be "cited" for it. I said well in that case I can't because I'm a racist! He then asked me to explain. I replied if the guy is a Mexican I'm voting GUILTY! Simply because I don't need to hear anything else. He then hung up on me. I never heard another word from them. Since then over the years I have probably received at least 3 or 4 summons for Jury Duty. I just toss them. I'm not against doing my so called "civic duty". But I'm not going to be backed into an impossible situation that could jeopardize my employment.
Now I would go because I'm retired. But they stopped sending me Jury Duty notices. They must be real rocket scientists over there who are running that place. Because there are retirement communities all over this city, that are just full of thousands of people who have nothing but time on their hands. But it appears they don't want them in their courtrooms.
