Looking at the current parts stores deals, for the same $19.99 one can buy 5 qts OReilly house brand full synthetic and a Wix filter (at Oreilly's, obviously) OR 5 qts Valvoline MaxLife and a Purolator One filter (at AAP). Which would you buy and why?

O'reilly, just because I don't run Valvoline.

Maxlife does seem to put up nice used oil analysis and has a nice dose of moly, IIRC. So, I don't think you'd go wrong either way.

Valvoline SynPower and Bosch Distance filter at AAP for $26.99. IFF your AAP takes the $10 of $25+ purchases coupon, it'll only cost you $16.99.

Personally I'd go with MaxLife. Nothing against O'Reilly's synthetic, but MaxLife puts up some great used oil analysis and seems like a very solid choice

Isn't O'Reilly's oil made by Ashland Oil Co.? (Valvoline). I saw that on the back of their bottle one time.
