For my own car, I prefer Baldwin oil and air filter with Wix as my backup plan if Baldwin isn't readily available.

However, I'm now helping a friend with her 2003 Honda CRV maintenance. She knows nothing about maintenance, except that it needs it. She doesn't love her car, nor even like it, but she needs it.

I already bought a Baldwin oil filter for her car, but now I realize that it also needs a new air filter.

A Microguard air filter for her car is $19 at local Oreilly. Baldwin or Wix is $29 at Oreilly.

I'm aware that I might be able to buy Baldwin or Wix for less than $29 from Walmart or Amazon, but Walmart is often a hassle. Sometimes Amazon is a hassle (lost in shipping or delays for example). With Oreilly I can buy online and pickup locally for free today with zero hassles.

She needs a reliable car. Is Microguard good enough?

Microguards are equal to Wix filters. They were at one time made by wix

My local O'Reilly stocks almost every part I need. They are my first go to. Prices are all about the same but their counter people are the best.

I agree. In my hometown, Oreilly counter people are the best. Better than at the other autostores in town. With regard to prices, Oreilly is lower than a NAPA corporate store in town, lower than Baxters, lower than Gunnars (a privately owned autostore). I admit that Autozone and Walmart cost the least, but at the cost of service and hassles.

IME Oreilly offers a good combination of service, selection, and price.

How are "Ms. Oregon's" tires looking this January?
I haven't looked at her tires yet. So far I was too distracted by other serious issues.

I had her check the oil level with my supervision so she'd learn how. Her oil was 2¼ quarts low in her 2003 Honda CRT that is supposed to have 4.5 quarts in it! Ouch! I had her add 2 quarts of Maxlife Blend 5w20. The oil level is now only ¼ quart below Full mark. I didn't have any more oil on hand.

We'll change oil as soon as we can get to it. I'm sure it's due or overdue, but at least it now has enough oil.

Her coolant overflow jug is almost dry and its cap is missing. Ouch! I purchased from Oreilly online a Dorman cap $10 and a gallon of Oreilly 50/50 mix coolant. She'll pick up that stuff from local Oreilly store.

I ordered a Wix air filter with free shipping from Amazon for $20. I ordered it after I posted the OP, but before I received advice that Microguard is acceptable. An MG filter would have cost $19 from local Oreilly. A Baxter filter wasn't conveniently available.

I haven't even thought about tires yet.

Nothing wrong with Microgard.
If she is burning that much oil, I'd do/plan a piston soak sooner than later and/or have her thicker oil to slow consumption. And put the whole 5qts in, my k24 sit right at the full line with 5 qts. It will give a small buffer until the soak can be done. That's great you are sharing your knowledge with her. Keep posted on the progress.

This was the first time in her life that she ever checked motor oil level. I insisted she do it with me. That way she'll learn to check her oil level and how to do it. She's 34 and single. I'm trying to save her car and educate her. Teach her some self help skills.

I don't know what an oil soak means. The source of her problem is that she never checked the oil level until recently. Unfortuneately, her never father taught her anything.

P.S. - Her old Honda CRT is speced to use 5w20 or 5w30. I had her pour in 2 quarts of 5w20 Maxlife Blend because that's what I had available. In future we'll use 5w30 Maxlife Blend in her car in hopes that it'll retain oil longer. The main issue was she never checked the oil level until I insisted she check it with me. She thought there was no need to check oil level if she had it changed at JLube once in a while. Now she knows she needs to check it at least once every 500 miles. Progress

Do a piston soak with Berryman's B12 Chemtool. Super easy, pull the plugs and a couple oz of Berryman's into the cylinder and let it soak for 12-24 hours. Occasionally turn the motor a little to work the Berryman's into the piston rings, top off as necessary if it leaks past the rings. Then with the plugs out hit the key to blow the cylinders out, towel over them will catch the nasties. Some add a tiny amount of oil/2 stroke oil to help seal once the plugs are back in. It will crank forever but she will start eventually. This cut my consumption by 1/2 when I did mine. Then I'd run Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 until the rest is gone. Also swap the pvc if the age is unknown. They are great engines that will last her a long time. I run up to 5w40 in mine so don't worry about going thicker, motor won't mind and will help consumption.

Good luck, that is very kind of you to help her.

This should be a BITOG motto IMO. Teaching basic maintenance saves money, cars, and lives.

I appreciate all the people who help me with advice when I need help with intermediate level maintenance. If it's an advanced topic, I hire a pro after asking questions here.

I believe WIX only made O'Reilly's 'upgraded' or premium version of the Microgard (I think they call it "Select"). That said, even the standard grade oil filter is perfectly fine.

Carlos, you’re a man of honor. Keep up the great work bud!

Never used their oil filters but I have used their air filters when my mom just showed up with one and wanted me to change her oil. But I tell ya if that is any indication of their quality, it was better than the OE (the build structure) I was shocked. I would have no problem using one on anything I own.
