I saw in the recent PQIA tests that the Peak conventional I have been using contains no moly and no boron. My Dakota has also been using just a little more oil than it used to, so I wanted to try a HM oil. I changed my oil today and used the O'Reilly store brand HM 10W30. I discovered it on PQIA:

I wanted an oil with some moly and boron but not a ton of it and the O'Reilly HM had what I was looking for. I have to drive my truck now and see how it feels and how it affects my MPG but just idling and revving my engine here at home I am very happy with the O'Reilly oil so far. My engine has a very quiet and smooth idle and just sounds a lot better to me. Peak is a good oil but the O'Reilly appears to be a little better. I will have to see how it does with consumption.

O'Reilly has their HM on sale now, 5 quarts for $17.95. There may be better oils out there but I like the moly and boron content in the O'Reilly oil. It also has a nice golden color and smells like QSGB. I wonder if that is from the moly content or maybe the O'Reilly oil supplier Omni Specialty Packaging is getting their base oils from SOPUS.

I will try to update how it performs after driving for a few weeks. I found very little info online from anyone using the O'Reilly oil and nothing at all from anyone who used it in a Dodge.

O'Reilly oil is produced by Omni Specialty Packaging as the OP stated, and not Ashland Inc. who produces Valvoline.

As far as base oil, SOPUS oils usually have a lower NOACK % than the O'Reilly oils so I doubt that is what Omni uses.

Thanks for posting that link, I haven't seen the HM tests before.

Yep, the Pennzoil has high Moly and Boron, but that Valvoline Max Life has a nice low noack % compared to the rest. I wouldn't be worried about the valvoline add pack either, they always look on the light side, but always perform well from what I have seen. Probably because some of their additives don't show up on the regular inorganic tests.

I think the lower max life noack, suggests a heavier base stock mix than the rest, and likely lower oil consumption. Which Max Life has a good rep for.

To the OP, yes the O'R oil looks better than the Peak.

Thanks but I do not use synthetic in my truck. I did consider using Maxlife synthetic blend; the low NOACK looks good but Maxlife has no moly. Neither does ST synthetic. Pennzoil HM has more moly and boron than I wanted. I tried Maxlife a long time ago when I had about 80,000 miles on my truck. I realize their formulation has probably changed a lot since then but I remember I took a hit on MPG and my truck was a little sluggish with Maxlife. O'Reilly HM is rated as Resource Conserving and I will have to continue keeping a close eye on my oil level to see if it helps with consumption. I put in a new PCV valve and air filter today too, maybe those will help with my oil usage. It's not much but is slightly more than it used to be, about 3/4 of a quart in 2500 miles.

Sounds like you have found the right oil for you. Yep, what you say about MaxLife giving you a MPG hit makes sense if it's running a heavier base oil than the others. Sounds like O'R has found a good balance point with their oils. Good to know for those people who just grab it and go.

Well the O'Reilly HM worked OK but I had to dump it early. My truck ran very well on the HM, quiet, smooth idle and all but the oil really did not do much for consumption. In fact my engine appeared to use more oil with the HM than it did on regular oil. Last weekend I checked my oil, it was low and I accidentally added too much oil when I topped it off. There was no foam or bubbles on the dipstick but I did not like the way my truck ran after that, it was sluggish and my oil pressure was reading lower than normal. I filled up my gas tank today and according to Fuelly I lost about 1.2 MPG. So today I just changed my oil and went back to conventional Valvoline. My truck is running very well now, much more like its old self again and I think it will be best to just stay with Valvoline, Napa store brand or Peak from now on. This is not to say the O'Reilly HM was bad, but I think my engine does better with a regular conventional oil without all the extra additives.
 
Hi Jimmy, thanks for reporting back.

As you said "O'Reilly HM is rated as Resource Conserving" which I find a little unusual, as to me a HM oil is always thicker, which means it burns less but has a bit more internal drag. They should also contain some seal conditioners, and maybe a bit more anti-wear additive.

Still you have found the Valvoline WB works well for you, and that's a good oil. Maybe one day you can try the Valvoline MaxLife semi-synthetic again. Valvoline doesn't usually contain moly, but it does use a lot of organic / non-metallic additives that seem to work very well.

The O'Reilly HM oil was fine, I had no trouble with the oil itself. This was my own mistake because my truck was not running right after I overfilled the sump last weekend. It was nearly time for my next oil change anyway so rather than try to empty out some from the engine and have to keep guessing until it was at the right level again I just did a new oil change and put in 4 quarts of conventional VWB today.

How often do you change oil?? This thread was started slightly over two months ago...

Most recent change in any of my drivers was last spring and one has 11 months, of course I use full synthetic in the two that get most miles...
 
I change my oil every 3,000 miles. I know most people here will say that is wasteful and oil can go a lot longer but that is how I learned it and I will continue changing at 3,000. Changing at 3,000 miles is also what Dodge recommends for my engine. Today's oil may be more modern and be greatly improved, but my engine is not. It really is just a 1960's design old school cast iron 318 with two cylinders removed. I am old school myself and set in my ways.

The O'Reilly oil had about 2300 miles on it when I changed it yesterday. More than anything I felt like I had really screwed up by adding too much when I topped it off and I wanted to drain and refill with the correct amount of oil. I let it drain for almost an hour to get it all out. And it was definitely overfilled, a lot more came out than usual.

The 5.0 in my 186K mi '96 F-150 has it roots back to the first '62 Fairlane 221 & 260 engines, still no reason to change oil at 3K mi... It gets yearly changes with whatever I bought on sale(currently Rotella 10W-30), doesn't know the difference... Yeah it generally runs a little smoother with fresh oil(most any engine will), but I'm more than satisfied it's OK with current OCI.. When I bought it was running fine with less than a quart of oil in the pan(was a major surprise when the drain didn't much more than cover bottom of pan), probably hadn't been changed in the last two or three years... At once a year it should be grateful...
 
Silly to change oil at 3k just because you learned it that way.
Oil back then was not as good as now.
Maybe time to learn something new.
It won't kill you.
