So I want to buy a vehicle up here to avoid sales tax. As an out of state resident and mil vet is there anything restrictions. Its my (loan) money and asking now to avoid as much [censored] redtape as possible.

If you buy a car out of state, some states that have sales tax will require you to pay in-state sales tax when you go to register the vehicle. Or if you bought it in a state with a lower sales tax, you have to pay the difference (so you'd have to pay 1% if you bought it in a 5% sales tax state and live in a 6% sales tax state).

So check on the laws, you might find there is no benefit to buying out of state.

Yup! WA for example will charge you the sales tax on the vehicle when you buy it out of state.

Oregon doesn't salt their road, and it rarely snows on the west side of the state. I've never seen rust on local cars in OR or WA.

That said, I doubt you'll save sales tax. Most states require sales tax to be paid in the state which it's registered--WA and CA certainly do.

What state are you from? You'd have to read what the rules are in the state you're going to register the car in. Some states make you pay sales tax if you bought it less than 6 months ago, but others may not make you pay the sales tax if it was owned for more than a year and you're transferring the registration.

I dont see what being a vet does for you wrt sales tax. Being out of state means that they shouldnt tax you in OR, rather, taxes would be collected by your home state when registering.

At least that's how it works if one should for example, buy a car in DE (tax free) and go to a neighboring state.

I payed Oregon tax and got it back at the end of the year. As for Washington, they would tax thebair we breathe if the idiots would vote it in. Salt in our region is supposedly illegal due to salmon beomg affected, and it's a major export for the state (s).

If you were on active duty you can liberally choose your domicile, as in, where you either were from or intend to retire to, current station, etc. Do that to your advantage, naturally.

For example if you "lived in" New Hampshire with no tax, bought a car in state (for simplicity), registered it there for six months, then moved ("moved") to a state with sales tax, they usually won't get you.

The problem with sales/ use tax is either a sale or a use can get you. Regsitering a car bought anywhere in a use tax state is gonna get you, unless (usually) you can prove you've "always had it" when you moved there.

See if there's an age after which your state doesn't charge sales tax. At some point I bought an old car and when I registered it the lady behind the counter said there would be no sales tax as the car was 8? or 10? years old.

A) You might want a newer car and B) That provision could easily have been changed.

Better off to post about things you actually know. Like, they don't use road salt in the West. Pea gravel is what's used for traction.
