I need to use thread locker on screws on an arm for a gate opener that stays outside in the cold all the time.

If I put the thread locker into the thru hole when the metal is 20F will it cure properly? The gate will be opening and closing while it's curing.

Where to put the drops of thread locker on a thru hole where the Allen screw goes into the hole to hit against an inner bar

Allen screw is SS and the metal part with the threaded hole is steel.

theard locker works by reaction with the metal ions . if you want to make sure it cures, apply a activator to it parts before applying .

Use the primer #7649. It speeds cure time in cold temperatures. Preheat the fasteners slightly (think hair dryer vs heat gun), and add heat after final torquing.

Then don’t over think it. The clamping force on the fastener will be high and relative motion pretty low if designed properly.

So for maximum holding power and taking into consideration of expansion and contracting of the steel parts and SS screws, do I tighten it up when it's hot or cold out.

Ss you definitely want primer. Metal expands when warm. But the torque specs are intended to allow cold-hot expansion. Don’t overthink it.

No small containers of primer. Only a $20 one.

I assume ThreadLocker primer will work with Permatex threadlock?

This is noe the normal situation of a bolt that needs to be held from coming loose. Like the 2 bolts that hold the brake caliper bracket to the vehicle.

This is a hollow metal bar with a solid metal bar inside. Allows for adjustment. Three Allen screws screwed into the hollow metal bar grab against the solid metal bar. This setup opens and closes the HOA gate. If it loosens the gate does not open properly, people get pissed off and call HOA President (me).

So the three Allen screws need to grab the inner solid metal bar and make sure it does not move with respect to the hollow metal bar.

Permatex Loctite is an anaerobic adhesive, so the part of the liquid that will cure is the small void space between the threads of the fasteners (i.e., where there is no oxygen present). From your description of the application, I'd suggest pre-heating the surfaces with a hair dryer and applying red Loctite 271 instead of the orange. In my real-world experience, the orange version is not much stronger than blue Loctite, while red Loctite is many times stronger, especially when applied to smaller fasteners.

I don’t think there’s much difference. The Allen screws push against the bar. Hard. Because the bar is solid, the Allen screws exert significant force against the threads in the hollow bar. That force pushes the hollow bar up and away, but it also puts a lot of force on it. Not clamping force, but the equivalent in the treads, just the opposite direction.

If you’re that concerned, I’d drill through one of the three. I don’t know how often or the mechanism of why it gets out of whack, but by the time you drilled through all three and ran out of adjustment space, I’ll bet it will be time for a new gate, or it will be somebody else’s problem.

I think you’re overthinking it too…

The brown glass bottle of primer goes a long way. I use it with loctite 243 on most stuff.
