hey guys, new member, and its great to be on. i have a 2003 toyota corolla with a 1.8 1zzfe, (the newer motor without the oil consumption). Right now i am performing an oil change every 3000 miles with mobil clean 5000 5w30 with a purolator filter. i would just like to know what options that i have based on conventional or synthetic. i would like to go synthetic every 5000, but i would like some views on a good oil and filter combo that can reach that potential. are their any advantages to using synthetic as opposed to dino on this motor? let me know!

thanks guys!

Got the same vehicle (2005 5 speed with only 193k on it) and I've run pretty well everything in it. We need to know how you drive it but just run the same oil 5000 miles or every 6 months and the engine will do just fine.

No advantages between today's Conventional or Syn in your engine with 5k OCIs IMO.

The 1ZZFE is a little hard on oil because of the timing chain but 5k on any oil is very safe. Love my Corolla and would buy another if I had too.

Take care, Bill

mainly short trips
also the weather in central jersey is anywhere from 0F to 100F. its a five speed, and i rarely shift over 3k rpms

Welcome!!

Also, change the PCV Valve on occasion. How often have you been changing it?

Bill and addyguy have it right. 5k with whatever conventional you prefer. I love our '10 corolla.

i change the pcv valve every 15000 miles exactly. oil up to 5000 i understand, however i would like to know a solid oil filter i can use that will withstand 5000 miles and still be adequate.

Mobil Clean 5000 would be fine for 5K as the name implies. If you go with a quality synthetic step up the OCI to 8-10K.

Changing the PCV valve too often. Go about every 50-60k at the minimum. Any oil filter will do 5k. Purelator, Supertech, Wix (which I have had a problem with at 9k miles and posted here) and such.

I have a 2008 Corolla A/T with only 24K. It is a good little car and very fuel efficient. I use dino every 6 months or so, which has worked out to approx. every 3500 miles. The reason the mileage is so low is because I juggle 3 cars between 2 drivers. If gas keeps going up the Corolla will get more usage.
The only dislike I have is the front seat positioning....I stuff a pillow behind my back for support.

vrivera87. oil up to 5000 i understand said:
Mobil Clean 5000 OR Motorcraft 5w30 Blend with 5000 +/- OCI's. I think a 5w20 would be better as well.

Oil Filter: Purolator Classic ot (better) PureOne would be my choice.

The Toyota Brand 0W-20 has been back spec'd to include your car.
That's the oil I would use particularly during a NJ winter.
The recommended OCI with this syn oil is 10,000 miles.

I've tried this oil and like it a lot.

My '07 Corolla (same engine) loved Havoline Deposit Shield and Chevron Supreme (same oil) 5w30. It's a "light" 5w30, is cheap, and runs very well. It was nice and quiet in that engine. I typically used the OEM Toyota/Denso filter, but with Purolator PureOnes available for cheap at Advance, I'd get those.

My folk's have a '03 Corolla that I maintain. It has 227,000 miles on it now.

I use mostly Pennzoil Conventional in it. I have used MaxLife 5w30. I change the Pennzoil conventional at 6,000 miles (the MaxLife could have gone 7,000). Keep in mind my mom drives 80 miles everyday, all highway. Wear is minimal- like 3ppm FE average per OCI via 3 used oil analysis.

It's a GREAT car.
