Hang a sign, open it up, get your degree, decide what you want for your future and the 4bays ( whether that be for piddlin, pt business, ft business, business for a partner, etc)

I appreciate the helpful responses. As far as the rest go, they're the main reason why I no longer frequent this site nearly as much as I did say, 3 years ago. Instead of mentioning things that someone would need to bear in mind when trying to do this, there are some folks who decide to open up with both barrels and give out the millions of reasons why a business like the one I am considering won't work. I know what I have to overcome.

Thankfully, I'm operating in a state where they haven't (yet) passed a law for everything under the sun. I realize most of the folks who post on here are from up north, and I guess that environment would cause you to think that everything has to be done strictly in accordance with some set of governmental rules. In North Carolina, the only thing you have to do to open a 'Service Station' is buy a privilege license from your municipality. I think I can manage to pay that $30 fee.

I wish you best of luck and it could be an education experience itself no matter what happens. Inquire about insurance irregardless to what other shops do. Don't outlay too much of your cash into it.

In my family the most successful businesses($200k-$500k/year salary) are things they do not have to compete with and offer a unique service.

I've heard that fire/water cleanup, mold removal, asbestos, dead bodies etc like a servpro franchise pays pretty good.

I own my own biz in an extremely competitive field. We have done very well even in a down economy.

But it should be noted that when I started this biz I worked harder than ANYONE else! Days, nights, weekends, holidays, no matter what I ran to the job while building my reputation.

Now people look to us as a premier service provider and we are able to command premium rates, control our schedule, etc. I even get paid to speak to others in my field! That one amazes me!

But it is a hard road to start with. I know few business owners who didn't struggle a bit in the beginning.
