They're talking about race use and citing a boutique racing oil site. Not sure how that's applicable to street use.

I'm betting they aren't factoring in the amount of oil that has to be added (and dilutes the contaminants) every time they change the filter.......

This is from a racing/performance perspective, not a cost-benefit.

I have raced amateurly with a friend in Rallycross, and we changed our oil filter every 2 or 3 races. Our policy was based on the fact that we were hammering at the engine - lots of revs up and down - and aired on the conservative side to ensure proper filter operation. We did not use wire-mesh filters, but opted for AC Delcos that were provided at a steep discount to us from a local shop.

Street conditions will never approach such racing conditions.

True. But stop and go driving, short trips, and lack of OCIs (periodic maintenance) should be taken into consideration.
I will ALWAYS change my oil filter at every OCI. It seems "my type" of doing this is becoming a dying breed.

I agree in general that the less contamination the less wear. But syn oil with 5000 mile changes gets me to 200k and no oil consumption and that is as far as I am going with a car. so, for me the factory OCI and higher quality off the WM shelf oil does the trick. If it aint broke...don't fix it. Note: I also change my air filter and do a techron treatment every 20,000 miles which results in the throttle body only needing a cleaning once at 120-130k. I believe more dirt comes in the air intake than the oil or fuel.

So in 200,000 miles my engine gets:

40 oil & filter changes
10 air filter changes
10 techron treatments
1 TB cleaning

Every engine I follow this with has used less than 1 quart of oil in 5000 miles at 200k.

This would more than likely be quite different across varied platforms. Then when you factor in the usage it gets pretty wild.

That's why no single recommendation works for everyone, too many variables.

I think I don't see enough information beyond a couple colored bar graphs to determine the testing methodology used, measurements and control procedures to reach much of any conclusion. I can't even tell what kind of racing it was.

I certainly don't see enough information to make the huge 'leap of faith' the poster of those graphs did with his broad generalization "don't think, according to this, that you can go 15k without changing your oil". Seems like he had his mind made up before posting the graphs.

The same goes for his conclusion regarding filter use in pc applications as compared to whatever kind of racing is represented. No doubt regular maintenance including the oil filter is good thing. But, I don't think the graphs proves anything regarding what that optimum oil fci is in pc use. My .02.

Oh no ... you're not gonna start changing oil filters half way through an OCI now, are you?

The OP in the thread you linked to obviously doesn't know that there are oil filters that will last longer than he would probably want to use the oil.

No, but it sure beats changing the filter only for multiple OCIs.

We do it especially when OCI may be several years.

Plus everyone here agrees the life of motor can be like forever but all filters have a limited life.

When I can take $50 worth of motor oil that goes from clear like in 500 miles to black and clear it up with a new $7 oil filter I think everyone on this site would consider one foolish to not do so.

Unless you use spin on filters in a clear glass case you never know if it has physically failed or was defective from the factory.

We have oil filters that point towards the sky, to the right and left side as well as towards the ground. The ones that point to the ground are my favorite to change out between OCI's. Ford trucks with the oil filter in the left front fender well while pointing to the left are still easy to change at OCI or between OCI.

So you would leave the oil in for several years and only change the filter?

The OP in the linked thread never indicated he was leaving oil in for years ... made it sound like he didn't think an oil filter could last a "normal" OCI.

So in your mind, how long do you think an oil filter is good for while on the car? I've seen people leave them on for 2~3 years, along with the oil and the filter looked fine. IMO, leaving oil in the engine for 3 years is probably worse than leaving an oil filter on for 3 years.

In the linked thread, the OP says:

"Please help with this silly question. Many of you have suggested that between oil changes, to change the oil filter often and just topping off the oil. I would like to start doing that."

BOF ... is that your relative? Sounds like he wants to change the filter more than once ("often") during an OCI.

He must be reading my replies here at BITOG. I need to find this guy and shake his hand.
