Ford wants $129.95 plus tax,to drain, run a chemical thru the system, flush, then refill with Ford type antifreeze and distilled water.
Tire Kingdom wants $89.95 to do the same thing as Ford, but, add a universal type antifreeze they say is made by Pennzoil.
Which would you choose?

Well, based on that answer, either one would work just fine.

I was hoping to get an answer from someone who has knowledge about the Ford type coolant versus a universal and the effects each have on the engine,if any.

If your in that certain point of your life where you can afford to pay four times as much as its worth, either type, any type, will last your engine to the point where it is replaced with another truck. Unless, you plan on keeping the truck for 200,000 miles, I really wouldnt worry about the coolant, most coolant in vehicles will go 5 years/150,000 miles. Most company trucks see no maintence on coolant and last well over 200,000 miles. My OPINION, use the dealership, only because I despise quick lubes and tire companies that do universal maintence on the side.

Dumb question-why do you want to change the Premium Gold so soon-it's rated for 5 years/150,000 miles from build date-you still have 2 years to save up for that dealer change bill!

Ford recommends only G-05 and no universal colants. Best to have the dealer do it. The price isn't really unreasonable. You could probably skip the chemical flush and ask the dealer if they would do a complete coolant change for $100 or so.

Because i'm anal when it comes to preventive maintenance!I change my fuel filter every 10K miles;I drain my trans pan every 10K miles;I do 3K mile oil changes.....Why? Because I want to!And,I sleep better knowing i'm keeping my truck in tip top shape!

The US economy needs many more people like you to get out of the slump we're in now.

You should flush PSF and Brake fluid every 10k miles, replace brake pads and rotors every 20k miles along with a set of new tires.

PS Change engine and cabin filters every 10k miles is a good preventive maintenance.

I wouldn't consider 4 years/70k miles excessive for a G-05 coolant change. It sounds about the right time to me.

I would choose the cheaper alternative. Since a total system flush is not being done with distilled water, much of the old coolant is staying in the system, which will necessitate more frequent coolant servicing intervals. Their corrosion inhibitor packages are compromised by the lack of a complete flush.

Since that's the case, why bother spending the extra money? Neither coolant will be significantly better at keeping your cooling system in shape given this scenario.

Blueovalfilter,

Based on what you want that makes you feel good (that's what we all do, one way or another) here are 3 pieces of info that should convince you to go with the dealer service:

http://www.paulmachenry.com/documents/CoolantFAQs.pdf Ford's own position paper on universal coolants

http://www.machenry.com/documents/CoolantUsageChart.pdf

http://www.modularfords.com/forums/showt...nt-Service-Tips

The first 2 links used to be available at the official Motorcraft site, but I can no longer find them there....anyone else find it there?

For my opinion, today's coolants are so great, I don't think you need the chemical (flush) part of the dealer service, especially at your interval.

I think if the OP would have left out the dealer service expense and just asked which coolant should he use for his Ford, Universal or G05, most would have not hesitated in recommending the original G05. And, it would be considered being conscientious, not anal, which tends to have a negative association.
