I've been reading claims about these things, that they have the potential to cause damage if used incorrectly. Some claim that they don't meet any USB specifications because of the possibility of connecting a USB-A to USB-C cable which could then connect two USB-A ports to each other where they start driving 5V (by default) to the same line.

What I've read about what's out there is that they at least need to have a proper resistor in the circuit. Maybe 55K Ohms? And a few claim to include a diode to prevent damage if a USB-A plug to USB-C plug cable is attached and used to connect two USB-A ports together.

I bought a USB-C (plug) to USB-A (ports) hub once, and that came with an adapter to connect it to a USB-A plug. Works pretty well, but I had some difficulty finding anything else. Some of these adapters have a little cable between the port and the plug but most seem to be solid. I saw Lenovo and Monoprice have them with their branding, although what I got was more or less generic.

Old USB A was 5.0V standard. USB C has a bunch of different voltage options is my understanding.

I have to believe this is simply straight through wiring.

I would guess the issue is if you have something expecting more than 5V its going to try to pull more current to compensate W=VxA. Then it boils down to what over-current protection you have or don't have.

So I guess it depends on what each end is plugged into because my guess is also there is no over-current protection in these adapters.

I bought a pack of those for cheap on amazon and my phone still charges fast enough using my old 2 amp chargers. There's no harm in using them I read about how the phone can't make the charger give more than what it can give.

They're certainly not going to damage anything as long as two power adapters aren't connected to each other.

USB-C has a bunch of protections (mostly negotiations) in it that prevent two USB-C power sources from blowing each other out. But USB-A typically has no smarts to it. I have heard of USB-A to USB-A cables, but those aren't spec compliant and can blow out if something like two USB-A power adapters are connected together.
