It entirely depends on the application which you haven't mentioned and the price.
If it was dirt cheap like a buck a quart I'd buy for my lawnmower but I wouldn't run it in any late model car.

When I can't get Formula Shell 10w40, I use this exact oil for my 1970 GTO, even the newer SM / SN formulas. I have used Castrol GTX products with this weight for over 25 years in my muscle cars, no issues at all. I have used the 5w30 conventional Castrol GTX in my modern daily driver cars. I would not use 10w40 in anything new unless the owner's manual called for it and I can't think of any modern domestic car that might. I like it because of the price mostly, it is always on sale somewhere and I have never had any oil related problems in any car that was using it. I don't notice any difference in oil consumption / pressure etc. the easy to measure metrics between Castrol 10w40 or Shell 10w40. I have never done a used oil analysis in my life so I can't give you specific details on this oil.

I'm using it on my Saturn. I use it because it burns less oil with it. And saturns typically do really good with a little thicker oil.

There was a BMW is the used oil analysis section that got one of the best reports ever to be posted on this board with Castrol 10W-40, but it can't be found because the search software doesn't allow searches with 3 letter words or numbers such as BMW, GTX, or 10W-40.

you guys saying that pretty much castrol gtx sucks compare to , QS green ,PYB , Mobil clean and regular Valvoline ? Is Supertech better than GTX ? dont forger that GTX is around $16

Use google search instead.

Most dont like castrol because the price is usually higher. Walmart has reduced GTX to the same as Pennzoil conventional, so use which one you like best one has no advantage over the other in my opinion,

I've read some stuff that stated that castrol caused build up over the course of a cars life. Is there any substance to that.

As CATERHAM points out, it depends on one's application. Aside from that, up here, if I needed a 10w-40 conventional, GTX would win hands down. For whatever reason, GTX tends to be on sale more than anything else. Another quirk up here is that GTX is also on the shelf in more grades than anything else. When it comes to 10w-40, GTX would be, by far, the easiest brand to find up here.

Myself, if I were looking for a 40 weight conventional, I'd go with a 15w40 HDEO. If I were looking for synthetic, I'd go to a 5w-40 or 0w-40.

GTX has always been a solid choice.
What made it unpopular, or more desirable to some is that it tended to priced at a premium relative to other brands of conventional oil.
I'd use GTX without hesitation if the price were right.
GTX also tends to be blended toward the thicker end of any give grade, so it might be a good choice for your Saturn.

And don't forget that $7 Castrol rebate going on until the end of the year.

Castrol GTX 10w30 and 10W-40 WB were the only oil our family used in cars for many years, about a a decade or more at least. Our engines never had any issues.

Even the switch to 5W scared us, now i pursue 0W if the app is right for it and i like my Super Tech 5W-20 for most else. Maybe Super Tech 5w30 if the car can benefit from that safety margin.

Castrol just isnt that competitive anymore, and it also costs more for no real reason. Only GC is attractive as a niche oil, IMHO, for cars that need its thickness to run with a comfort level.
