I have a gallon of Dex III/Merc that was used a couple years ago. It's got a couple quarts left in in. It is ok or does it absorb water or... ?

I also have an open but nearly full quart of Dex VI about the same age.

its certainly easier service than what is in the transmission. since its an oil I'd say its fine unless it has some odd separation or condensation going on.

Totally fine.

Now, if it's been sitting outside in the sun and been exposed to freezing temps for years...maybe I'd be a bit concerned, but otherwise, don't worry.

Ha ha lol, send it to me instead!

Seriously, ATF is not 'hydroscopic' where is sucks water out of the air like mineral oil does (brake fluid)

(a) Mineral oil doesn't.
(b) Brake fluid is not mineral oil, unless you have an old Citroen or Rolls Royce.
(c) Jeez!

A few ATFs are hygroscopic - Toyota's ATF WS is one of them, at least the original formulation. I haven't seen the new XOM formulation turn purple upon exposure to the atmosphere.

This is correct.

If it was tighty capped, this is not an issue.

I drained the OEM(I think Idemitsu or XOM Japan made it) fill from my parent's car 2 weeks ago, and I noticed the drain pan that was used has purple oil in, the old fluid did drain reddish brown. It was 12 year old fill with 50K on it.

The filler pump I used to fill the transmission back up(http://www.lumax.com/lx-1341) isn't totally "sealed" but the fluid in there is still bright red. I think XOM did a small change to it but who knows?
