I was told by my computer guy to get the anti virus Bit Defender.. Is that any good?
He will be here Monday and said that is one of the top ones that does not slow things down. This has been an ongoing question around here and i even posted a few questions a while back but opinions seem to change like the weather. I have avast on two computers which i am forced to keep because they auto renewed it. I think i like avast but others say its not so great.. Im sure there are a lot of people here that know, i am not one of them. Thank you..

I bought a one year Bitdefender off Amazon back about a year and half ago, it was one of the $10.00 one year deals or maybe it was $7.50, I bought it because it was cheap and had good reviews. I never cold get it to work right, it slowed my computer to a crawl, would not let web pages load even though they were legit normal pages like BITOG and the Dodge Forum. The GUI had problems too. Some guys have had good luck with BD but for me it was terrible. I ditched it and did the 30 day free trial of ESET NOD32 and have been with ESET ever since. ESET is one of the very best AV's there is. It stays out of the way, does not slow me down and can be bought on sale on Amazon for a good price. My most recent license was only $20.00 for 3 pc's for one year.

I used Avast Free a few years ago. Back then it was OK, not the best but not the worst either. Nowadays it is said to be mostly a useless piece of bloat ware. If you want a good free AV, most of what I have read is that Avira is the best of the free programs.

I have Bit Defender Total Security and haven't had any problems. All my problems were during the different years I used Norton.

There is a free version of Bitdefender available, it seems to work fine. Even my kids haven't got their machines infected with it.

Antivirus seems to change by each generation. One vendors will work great, until a generation change, then it stinks. I find myself looking for a good free one, and planning on changing it eventually.

I had major issues with BD, blocking random stuff including accessing an empty sandisk cruzer flash drive...

I'd go for eset or kaspersky.

BD Free has been working well for me on several of my machines, but it was blocking certain programs on my parents' machines, so I ended up installing Avira Free on theirs instead.

worked great on my daughter's vista laptop but caused BSOD on my son's W7 desktop. when it works, it's great for people who are not PC savvy as everything is done automatically without user input. i use AVG on my own personal PC/laptops.

I read a recent article that went through all the "free" antivirus programs and listed the unwanted stuff they push along with the AV programs. One quite common thing was to push a "secure browsing" toolbar. In reality it was just a modified "ASK" toolbar.

I pay for ESET, but I buy a 5 copy package and give the other copies to family.

Bit Defender is a very effective anti virus. It has always scored well on the antivirus bulletin tests and it scores very high by 3rd party labs that test it.

It's a pact leader in the antivirus world. Just does not do to well with some programs (specifically Sandboxie) in my case so I do not use it.

Performance will vary from PC to PC. My main PC is a 2.0 ghz quad core with 6gbs of ram. I have never seen it impact my PC in a negative manner. However if you have a older PC which launched with something like XP and has 500mbs-1gb of ram I wouldn't recommend it. Many people simply don't meet the minimum requirement for their operating system and like to complain how "programs" slow down their pc when in fact the bottleneck is their ram.

It's generally regarded as one of the best anti viruses money could buy and I would use it without a second thought if I used a Windows based OS often.

Just no. Security Essentials has essentially gone unsupported for over a year. It used to be pretty good.

Just yes.

It has been rebranded and is now called Windows Defender.

Running Microsoft security essentials or Windows defender is about as good as having no antivirus! Just about worthless.

choosing an anti virus is like choosing a motor oil everyone seems to have a different opinion.. The reality is i don't have anything worth looking at on any of my p.c.'s except at the shop i have credit card numbers.. I was told by a number of people high up in the know that if someone does not mind everyone snooping at what is in their computer using it is no problem but if you don't want someone snooping don't write it in or near your computer. If you use your credit card online it is not safe at all. Hackers are everywhere and i know this so i never use my credit card near my computer and i cover all the cameras and cover all the mics on my kids computers because it is too easy to turn on cameras from other locations.

I use the free one on my fleet when I don't have enough free Kaspersky licenses. The lightest and fastest AV out there and always scores at the top in protection. Hard to beat for free protection.

You brag about credentials then make it publicly known you aren't aware how [censored] your product is. Not good. Windows defender is just not good, in any flavor or form. Is it better than nothing? Sure. Is that "good enough?" Not even remotely.

Dude, there is no need to be sarcastic about "credentials" to a Mentally Challenged Systems Administrator who is also a Minesweeper Consultant & Solitaire Expert.
