What happened to one bolt wheels? They looked really cool and I'd assume would be slightly more user friendly. Why the increase to 4-8 bolt design?

Centerlock wheels are expensive usually. Also the torque spec is pretty high on them.

That being said, they are sexy. I would love to own a Porsche with them.

I've had knock off wheels on a couple of cars and we had them on race cars and all that is needed is a mallet to tighten or loosen them. Braking & acceleration force are handled by splines and the center nut held them on. No extreme torque needed.

True but the average American motorist is just a couple IQ points above legal mental retardation. Generally people that own cars with centerlock wheels are enthusiasts who know how to properly deal with them.

When I worked at Sears we were not allowed to work on knock-off wheels because there was no way to use a torque wrench on the wheels.

Yah. I have never used a torque wrench on lugs. Tight enough to not fall off but not too tight so that you can't change them has been working for me. Would they let you work on 60s Mopars with left handed lugs ?

There was a whole section in the training classes for techs about the Mopar lugs. Never had one come in though.

I actually read a pretty cool article in either Racecar Engineering or Race Tech magazine about wheel threads. They were saying how the Mopar design is used by the center locks on F1 cars because they will self lock with wheel rotation. Especially helpful since most of the new setups have 2 or 3 threads to hold the wheel on to give them sub 2 second pit stops.

Truth.

There's are many reasons that a 100 IQ is "average".

Isn't the Tq like 450 ft lbs for those Porsche center lock rims? I read in a car rag that a guy bought his GT3 with those rims and switched them out for the 5 luggers at quite an expense.

I think they would be more hassle then they are worth.

Ya there is a special geared lug wrench they make for those.

I wouldn't trust the average tire jocky with center locks, I have only found a handful that know what a torque wrench is.

Jay Leno has a few videos on maintaining them in pre war cars. Your supposed to hit the ears on them with a lead hammer on a regular basis. I have seen some of the Jag's and Bugatti's wired at the tracks.
