and beat Canada 4-3 in overtime. The overtime goal was scored with 30 seconds to go. As a soccer fan...this was the best woman's game I ever witnessed.

The US goes for GOLD....against Japan on Thursday.

Have to give it to the Canadians.....they've kept their record going for 11 years now.....they have not defeated the US in that amount of time.

I guess if the US lost....I would blame it on the non-calls by the referees too.

"clearly biased"....What nationality was that ref?

The US outplayed the Canucks at least 60/40....if not more.

The person I felt most sorry for was the Canadian who had a 'hat trick'....and still lost the game. She was outstanding and one of the best woman's soccer players in the world.

Non-calls? No, I think that it was the actual calls, I believe that were at issue. Both teams played their hearts out, to be certain & the actual game play was a hoot to watch. I just don't enjoy referees changing the course of sporting events - nationalism be damXed. I'm actually being quite objective about it as opposed to childish. Enjoy your team's victory today - they play w/ real heart & I wish them the best as they advance to the gold medal game. Hopefully they win the gold on the strength of their game play as opposed to the pyrrhic victory they were awarded a little while ago...

I saw what I saw, as did the rest of the world. I'm really happy with/ the way the payers played. Enjoy the next couple of games. Something tells me that we just saw the real championship game, though, regardless as to how it actually ends.

Well said. Did you hear the booing from the stands on the ref's penalty kick call? Everyone saw it for what it was, not just Canadian.

BTW, the Canadian (team captain) with the hat trick was Christine Sinclair.

USA USA USA

For some reason that can cause a stir just about anywhere in the world.

The call on the Canadian goalie was bizarro and terrible. But USA outplayed the Canucks in OT ... too bad, they gave it a good shot. Christine Sinclair was excellent.

Right on Pablo....the ref let a lot of penalties go...on both sides.

Go USA !

If that were a hockey game there'd be rioting in the streets and the ref would be in protective custody to spare her from the onslaught of strongly-worded letters from irate Canadians.

Except the goalie admitted that the referees warned her in the first half not to slow the play of the game down. My personal opinion on official's calls is this. Once the official has warned you not to do something again it is the players responsibility to ensure he/she does not do that again and if a call goes against your team do not blame it on officials.

IMO, Canada got robbed. Even 'if' the 6 second call was legit, warning or not, the hand ball call that resulted in the penalty kick was wrong. A US player did very similar earlier in the game and it wasn't called. Always a shame when the game is taken out of the hands of the players, and into the hands of an official.

The US will have it's hands full with the ball control Japanese in the finals.

All that said, it was a good game to watch.

The difference was that in the OT....the US was playing for the win.... and the Canadians were hoping for a shootout.

The Canadians were 30 seconds short... from accomplishing their goal....and possibly winning a shootout.

BTW...in the NHL...its been a long time since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. Whats up with Canada....and their sport ???

Great play by my KINGS last season.

True, but, in these Olympics at least, we're getting our ***** kicked in sports which used to be 'ours' as well.

(NO americans in the men's 400 meter dash final; U.S. Beach V-ball men eliminated, and we "invented" that sport; the stomp on everyone with impunity, U.S. uber-team pro ballers getting the pants scared off of them by Lithuania; etc., etc.)

What's next, a shutout in the 4x100 relay?!?

Even as a Canuck I have to say that it is *GREAT* for the sport that less-established U.S. franchises win the cup. Cities like Charlotte and Tampa and even L.A. in the last several years have raised and improved the profile of hockey in the states.

Factors why more Canadian teams aren't bringing home the cup?:

- smaller markets (only Toronto and Montreal are really big markets by U.S. standards)

- established markets (most Canadian teams could put 5 arena janitors on the ice and still sell out every night)

- less money (the exchange rate isn't bad now, but it used to be $1US - $1.60Cdn just a few years ago; and I think tickets are cheaper here too)

- The league wants success in the U.S. in order for the league and the game to grow.

- The game is simply less centred on and in Canada. Many of the best players are now American, due to the increasing popularity of the game and its attraction to high quality athletes; and many players are coming into the league from all over the world.

- Inventing and/ or dominating a sport does not guarantee eternal, exclusive success. Remember the Jays winning it all twice in the early 90's? The Expos woulda run away with it all in the strike year that came after that, too.

Lets do an update on how well the US is doing...vs. Canada

Canada: 1 Gold/ 3 Silver/ 7 Bronze
U.S. 30 G0ld/ 19 Silver/ 21 Bronze

...and the US will be able to get several more Gold or Silvers in....Mens Basketball, Womans Basketball, Womans Beach Vollyball, Men's Vollyball.....and a few others as well. You can't be dominant in every sports...all the time.
