Older Camrys faster than newer ones?

Lol that was part of it, but I realized speed doesn't matter.

The Camry needed some work and my aunt gave me the VW TDI, I thought it was a good idea because the great mpg, but it's a money pit so I'm back to Toyota.

Plugs help, and the I4 is prone to enough carbon built up that you may not get full timing advance with 87 octane, they can run better with 89, but I suspect the improvement stops at 88 or so. Also, the front O2 sensor (s) can make the car sluggish as they age, even though no CIL is set. Tire size has an effect on the actual final drive ratio as well. Transmission programming may have changed a bit year to year. There's a 08 V6 in the family which will light up the right front easily without the traction control on. I wouldn't turn that one over to a young driver.
 
My 97 had new plugs, and no sludge under the valve cover. I actually tried 91 octane a few times and it didn't make a difference. It has the smaller tires on 14" rims. I'm guessing plugged cat or bad O2 sensor.
