Ran across some old data I had on Mobil 1 as published by the Mobil Corp.

Mobil 1 SE/CC (Circa 1979)
85% PAO and 15% POE
Grade: 5w20
Pour Point: -85°F/-65°C
Flash Point: 460°F/238°C
Viscosity at 0°F: 1100 cP
Viscosity at 210°F: 7.5 cSt

Enjoy.

Thanks! Look at that pour point. It's cool that they were just up front about the %'s of base oils used.

Hmmmmmmmmmm. . .

When the base oil combo was "85% PAO, 15% POE", Mobil wasn't hesitant to share this info. Now, with questions being asked, it's suddenly a trade secret, and we customers shouldn't concern ourselves with such information.

I'm afraid that Mobil's got a dead rat somewhere nearby, and rather than actually do something about the rotting corpse, they're just telling us not to smell it.

427, thanks for the info. I remember M1 from back then, but not the particulars (I didn't start using it until the mid-80s). Was this from when 5w-20 was the only grade, or were they selling 5w-20 along side 5w30?

Thanks for that - I was really curious how the original Mobil 1 of the 1970's compared to the 5W-20 they make today...it is a LOT thinner than I thought it would be!

IIRC, this was when the 5w-20 was the only grade. SE was superseded by SF around 1979.

Yep, remember when Mobil was making a big deal about the secrets of others?

The Complaint

Mobil's Position

Mobil contended that Castrol misleads consumers that Syntec is a fully synthetic motor oil despite the fact that Syntec is no longer synthetic. The challenger alleged that after years of manufacturing Syntec with PAO, Castrol replaced the PAO, which had constituted nearly 70% of the volume of the product, with hydroprocessed mineral oil in approximately December 1997. As a result of an independent laboratory test conducted by Savant Inc., Mobil maintained that samples of Syntec purchased in June and December 1997 contained 93% and 80% PAO. Other samples of Syntec, one purchased in December 1997 and four purchased in 1998, contained no PAO, and instead contained 100% mineral oil.
